installation - Is it possible to install Windows Vista over Windows Vista?

Windows Vista Ultimate is currently installed on the computer. It's a genuine full license version that came in a retail box. I installed it from the DVD disc. Now, can I use the same DVD disc to install Windows Vista Ultimate once again on the same computer, but this time in upgrade mode? Is this a license violation? Is it even technically possible? Will the Windows Vista setup guide just tell me "Windows Vista is already installed you moron" and tell me to buzz off? I mean I'm pretty sure that it won't protest if you are upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 or to Windows 8. But what if you're going from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows Vista Ultimate (even the editions are the same)? Will it swallow that?... I have never tried this before, so I wouldn't know. When I need to re-install Windows I usually do a disk format and then a clean install on top of that. The reason I ask this is because I have a registry corruption of some sort, and despite my...

windows 7 - Win7, after prolonged usage weird keyboard "things" happening, caps lock stuck?

Ok, so bear with me, not sure how to explain this. So after about 10 hours of constant running my computer/keyboard starts to act weird. Its as if it has caps lock depressed continually, along with I think a ctrl key. If I hit caps lock, It works for the letters as it would normally. But if I type . I always get the > symbol. No matter if caps lock is on or not. It seems to effect mouse functionality to. For instance in gmail, I clicked on a email in my inbox and used the scroll to scroll down the message, but for some reason it closed the email and went back to the inbox. Num lock and scroll lock are both off. Any ideas.. It kind of hard to explain the situation because it only happens after a long usage period, and when it does it somewhat renders the computer unusable. I think it is related to this post Caps Lock is mapped to Shift but it doesn't really make sense to me? How would I all of sudden gain a different keyboard mapping? EDIT: I forgot that I should've put w...

Windows 7 machine makes router drop ALL wireless connections

Some background: My home network consists of my desktop computer, a two-month old Windows 7 (x64) machine which is online most frequently (N-spec), as well as three other Windows XP laptops (all G) that only connect every now and then (one for work, one for Netflix , and the other for infrequent regular laptop uses). I used to have a Belkin F5D8236-4 wireless router, and everything worked great. A week ago, however, I found out that the Belkin absolutely in no way would establish a VPN connection, something that has become important for work. So I bought a Netgear WNR3500v2/U/L. The wireless was acting a little sketchy at first for just the Windows 7 machine, but I thought it had something to do with 802.11n , and I was in a hurry so I just fished up an Ethernet cable and disabled the computer's wireless. It has now become apparent, though, that whenever the Windows 7 machine is connected to the router, all wireless connections become unstable. I was using my work laptop for a so...

windows - How to change default naming convention for duplicate downloads

I found a similar question on this site, but it wasn't exactly a match and no one solved it. I save and organize many pictures, everyday. Most of them come in sets. So I name the first picture "pictureM". And I copy that name and then paste the name when it comes to saving the 2nd picture, but then I have also have to manually add a corresponding number. i.e. "pictureM2". In Firefox, if I don't add the number, a dialog pops up asking if I want to replace the "pictureM" with the current download. What I would love for it to do is just save the picture, with no dialog or feedback, but add the sequential number automatically. i.e. If "pictureM" already exists, the picture still saves as "pictureM2". Then the next picture I try to save will auto save as "pictureM3", and so on. If another browser does this, please inform me. If another browser does this, but saves it in the format "pictureM (2)" or something funky...

ip address - Locally, External IP Resolves to Router Admin

I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 router, and I don't have many problems with it, however one thing which has always bugged me is that its admin page is accessible locally via two locations: 192.168.2.1 and my IP address (e.g. 76.216.174.73). If I am at the library, etc. I cannot access it at all, and that's fine because if I really need to, I can use an SSH tunnel. My issue is that I can access it at my remote IP address while on my local network. I would like to only be able to get to it by 192.168.2.1 while within my local network. This is because if I'm writing a script which connects to my server, I have to use 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.2.1, but before distributing must switch it to my external IP address (or my no-ip address.) Is there anyway to prevent my remote IP address from resolving to the router's admin page while I am on the local network (that is, connected directly to the router by ethernet cable or wifi), and instead have it forward me to the correct computer and po...

Where to see all options for a windows command?

I wanted to get list of file names from a folder, and I got the solution from this post How do I copy all file names in a folder to notepad? . I would like to know where to get info of all command line switches/options available for a single windows cmd (not the whole list of commands). I tried dir -h / dir --help / dir help but nothing helps. As you get for commands in unix, it would be helpful to know.

hard drive - Folder Size 18.7gb but Size on disk 1.33TB - why/how could this have happened? Synology DS212 NAS RAID

To start - I am way out of my comfort zone trying to fix this problem but I am not sure what else to do! We have (2) 3TB hard drives in a Synology DS212 NAS RAID and are constantly running into issues of not having enough space. Even though we are uploading 30-90GB weekly, there is no way that we should be completely full at this point. I clicked on a folder in the drive and pulled up the properties. It says that the size is 18.7GB but the size on disk is 1.33TB. I researched and was brought to this site where a question was answered . Ultimately I learned that clusters have a minimum size and we thought that might be the issue, but even if we have the largest allocation size possible: 32,768 KB * 3612 (number of files in that folder) it would still only take up 118 GB of extra space. Can anyone explain why this is happening? As mentioned above, we upload photos and video files weekly (30-90gb) but after we export our raw camera files we delete those. Just thought that might be pertine...

Windows BSOD loop: "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" after repartitioning and installing Ubuntu Gnome

Windows 10 x64 v1607 won't boot after I reprtition my single 1TB HDD and installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.1 LTS amd64. it keeps doing a BSOD "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". My exact steps: Boot from Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.1 LTS amd64 on USB drive. 'Try Ubuntu Gnome' option. Shrink Windows partition from 850GB to ~= 350GB in GParted. Move recovery partition (I have created a System Repair Disk) (also in GParted) Create new ~=350GB FAT32 Partition. Use Ubuntu Gnome installer; use 'install alongside Windows' option. Installer succeeds. Restart. Grub menu comes up, select Windows. Windows shuts down. I didn't see exactly what happened, but I came back and my PC was competely off. Turn back on. Grub comes back, Windows again. Windows bluescreens with 'INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE'. Restarts. Automatic Repair fails. Restart. Choose Windows at Grub again. Same bluescreen. This time no Automatic Repair - just shuts down. Choose Ubuntu Gnome at grub. Boots successfully...

How can I revert back to the old Start menu in Windows 8 Preview?

I don't like the new Metro UI. Is there any way to get rid of the new Metro UI in Windows 8 Preview and go back to the old Aero UI with its' Start Menu? Answer None of these is a solution for the RTM (final) version of Windows 8. They do work on the Consumer Preview and previous releases of Windows 8. The following programs will allow you to have the Start Menu as in Windows 7: I personally recommend Classic Shell. It's Open Source and it works great.

windows - How to run MS Excel 2007 from a batch file?

I can't find a proper *.exe for Excel in the usual places: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office "c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\excel.exe" Does anybody know where I would find the Excel executable for a Windows Vista machine? For that matter, also invoke Excel to open an existing *.xls file using a batch file? Incidentally, the Shortcut for Excel shows "target:" to be Microsoft Office Professional Hybrid 2007 Answer Just add this line to your batch file: START "name of spreadsheet.xls" This will use the default file association to open the file. If you need a specific version though, then you'll need to find the appropriate .EXE file which might be under a sub-directory called "Common" or "Common files" which should be somewhere under "C:/Program Files/" or "C:/Program Files (x86)/" (stuff is often scattered between both of these as applications are slowly ...

windows 7 - How to stream music from notebook to speakers via wi-fi?

I have a Windows 7 notebook and speakers in some rooms of my house. I'd like to stream music from notebook to speakers over wi-fi or bluetooth. I don't want to use wires between notebook and speakers. Is there a device which is able to receive a audio stream from my notebook and play it via speakers or how else can I stream music? Answer The easiest way is through the Apple Airport Express . You just plug it into an outlet and plug your speakers into it. Then the speakers show up in iTunes available for playback. It should work fine with Windows or OSX.

macos - Access Finder's "Open With" menu from the commandline (for tab completion)

On Mac OS X, I know one can open a file from the commandline with its default application with open , and with other applications with open -a . Thus, open movie.avi open -a VLC movie.avi open movie.avi -a VLC all work. My only complaint is that when I type open movie.avi -a it completes over all applications that exist on the computer — for instance in zsh I get zsh: do you wish to see all 793 possibilities (200 lines)? — while what I would like is for it to complete over only the handful of applications that Finder's "Open With" menu would have shown. So is there a way to access this list that Finder knows, and make my shell (zsh, but I can switch to bash if it helps) aware of the list, in such a way that tab completion would show only those applications? Answer AllApplications $ AllApplications -h Created 03 March 2011 by Hank McShane version 0.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher Use this command line tool to get the path to all applications that can open a file from...

networking - ISP modem/router, how do I enable Bridged Mode and use my own router?

I have an Arris TG1672G supplied by my ISP. I have called and asked if I can use my own modem (a Surfboard for example) and they told me I can't use my own device. Apparently we aren't renting it, we purchased it and they only allow their own approved devices. So I'm stuck with the wifi router/modem. I want to use Bridged Mode to simply pass the data directly to my other router, which has more ports that I desperately need, and let it handle all my networking needs. What do I do? I've tried this and failed multiple times. As far as I can remember, these are the steps I need to take on the Arris device: Set to Bridged Mode Disable DHCP on LAN settings Disable DHCP on WAN settings Disable Firewall Next steps on the router include (Ubiquiti Edgerouter): Connect modem to router, router to PC/Laptop Set network adapter IPv4 properties as follows; static IP -> 192.168.1.2 subnet mask -> 255.255.255.0 default gateway -> 192.168.1.1 preferred DNS -> 192.168.1.1 ...

boot - How to Create Windows 7 Bootable DVD using Nero

I have an .iso file that contains the windows 7 home edition and I want to make a bootable dvd to install it to my PC, I have nero burning rom 10. Is there any tutorial for this because I found this: http://www.windowsvalley.com/how-to-create-windows-7-bootable-dvd-using-nero/ but it is explaining about .IMA files not .ISO files! is there any difference or its the same. Maybe I didnt understand the 3d step, do I have to choose the ISO file that I have? Thank you for your time. Answer If the below screenshot matches what you see, you simply need to select the DVD-ROM (ISO) option in the sidebar on the left. If the sidebar doesn't match what you see, I can't help you with Nero, as I don't use it. However, in that case you might try seeing the instructions at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download . Click "Show me how" at Step 2 ("Burn your CD or create a bootable USB stick").

windows - Export PowerPoint to PDF with each animation on a separate slide

I have a PowerPoint presentation where I extensively use simple animations, only appear/disappear effects triggered by the mouse (not time based), without any smooth transitions. Is it possible to export a PDF where every single step of the animation is on a separate slide? . The problem is that, exporting through the save-as menu, each slide in the pdf is just a snapshot of the corresponding powerpoint slide (with everything visible). Example : Suppose I have the following slide that start visualizing the shape [A] : [A] clicking the mouse or pressing the right arrow triggers the 'appear' event for the shape [B] : [A] -> [B] clicking the mouse or pressing the right arrow triggers the 'disappear' event for the shape [A] : [B] The PDF exported file of this PowerPoint animation will have a single slide with [A] -> [B] , while I would like to have three separate slides. Answer Converting a PPT to a PDF while maintaining the animation steps is something I too...

Set an HTML page as the wallpaper on Linux

I want to set an HTML file with JavaScript as my wallpaper on Linux. I'm running Openbox, how can I set it up so this is my desktop background? Answer I would recommend running a lightweight browser in the background, as suggested earlier. This browser should be perfect, since you only want to use it to set a single page as your background. It uses WebKit, so everything should display just fine, and it's light enough that startup should be instant. As long as you have gtk, webkit-gtk, python, and the python bindings for webkit-gtk (installed by default on many distros, and available from most package managers), you can save it to your home directory as, say, browser.py and add something like: python ~/browser.py YOUR_WEBSITE & #browser.py requires http:// before remote urls to your ~/.config/openbox/autostart in order to have it start along with openbox. You could then edit your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml to include something like this under the section: no yes ...

networking - XP can connect to router and LAN but not Internet

I have a modem router (TP-Link TD-W8961ND) connected to the internet and working fine. It is broadcasting a wireless network and that too works fine. I have a second modem router (Siemens SL2-141) functioning as an extender. It is wired to the first router and broadcasting a wireless network with the same SSID, same security, but on a different channel. DHCP and UPnP are disabled on the second router. My iPad, iPhone, and Win7-based ThinkPad are all able to move between the two networks with no problems. We also have a WinXP SP2 Netbook. When in proximity to Router1, this machine accesses the LAN and Internet with no problems. As soon as it gets closer to Router2, it picks up the signal and shows an "Excellent"/"Strong" connection but it can no longer see the internet. It can see Router2's config page and the other machines on the network but it cannot get past the router to the internet.

Stop PDFs from displaying inside Google Chrome

When I click on a PDF link in Chrome, it opens automatically inside the browser window. How can I get it to download instead and open with an external viewer? Update : I implemented djhowell's solution but Chrome still seems to be handling PDF files differently from regular files. When I click a PDF link it opens in Adobe Reader, but normally files download to a folder first. I also find it weird that this is controlled by Reader and not Chrome. Are there not any file-type controls in Chrome anywhere? Answer You can disable the Adobe plugin in Chrome, which will force Chrome to download the PDF. It's under Settings > Privacy and security > Content Settings > PDF documents. Or enter chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments in your browser address bar to go straight there.

windows - How do I delete a folder that's in use?

Sometimes when I'm working in Windows I'll get this prompt when I try to delete a directory: Folder In Use The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another program Close the folder and try again. However, the folder isn't "in use" at all, and I don't have it open. So how can I delete it short of rebooting? Answer This answer is old, but seems to still get traffic. As noted below, there is a built in tool in Windows now: Start → All Programs → Accessories → System Tools → Resource Monitor (or Run resmon.exe) You can get more info in the answers below this one. The rest of this answer is no longer as relevant. Process Explorer from Sysinternals will let you search through the handles and DLLs. Search for the directory and find out which process is "using" the folder. From there, you have the ability to either shut down that process, or just close that particular file handle. Be sure about what you're doing when working wit...

How do I tell MS Excel to use the non-standard decimal separator in graphs and charts?

MS Excel 2010, using US English as default language. I have a document that needs to use the interpunct (·) as the decimal separator. I can go to File -> Options -> Advanced -> Decimal separator and set it to the interpunct (either via the alt code, 0183 or using charmap). This works great for the cell contents, but it doesn't appear to affect the charts. How do I get the charts to reflect the correct decimal separator?

How can I get Excel's undo/redo functionality to work in a more traditional *per window* manner (and not for the entire instance of Excel)?

This has been driving me crazy lately. I'm not used to having having a program have a global undo/redo functionality (as in when I undo something, it will undo the last action in any currently open Excel window). I'm used to having each open window having its own undo/redo list. How can I get Excel 2007 to function more traditionally like that? Answer If you want separate undo/redo lists, open separate instances of Excel. If you simply open multiple files by double-clicking, they're opened in the same Excel process and share the same undo/redo list. If you manually open multiple instances of Excel and then open your files in those instances, they don't share the undo/redo list. For further details, you might want to check out:

windows 7 - HDD Disappears after sleep mode

I recently purchased a HDD and it works fine except if I go into sleep mode. Every time my computers comes out of sleep mode the HDD disappears completely. I have literally tried EVERYTHING to fix this, including: Changing SATA mode to IDE, AHCI, and RAID Changing sleep mode (ACPI mode) from Auto to S3 Switching the SATA port on the motherboard Restoring BIOS to default settings Installing Microsoft update KB977178 (Apparently its already installed with SP1) Updating BIOS firmware Updating Intel Chipset drivers (Seems to be up to date already) Enabling hibernate mode Changing advanced power settings (Setting turn off hard disk after to 0 (never), 20, and 140 minutes) Disabling write caching on the hard drive And probably many more things during my 9 hour attempt at fixing this today I also tried phoning my HDD's manufacturer (Hitachi) as well and they couldnt provide an answer. The hard drive seems to be OK and not showing any bad sectors. The only way the HDD will be detected is ...

multiple monitors - View linked Excel 'Windows' on separate screens

A colleague had a problem where he couldn't link a cell in his destination workbook with a series of cells in a source workbook. The problem was that in order to link workbooks, he had to open them from within the same Excel instance . If he double-clicked on the destination workbook, or fired up Excel independently of the first, the intra-book linking didn't work. Now he has this solution, he as a different problem. He wants to be able to view and manipulate both source and destination workbooks at the same time - on different screens. However, because both workbooks are now running withing the same instance of Excel, when he drags one workbook across to his second monitor, the first is carried across too. Is there a way he can keep these workbooks linked, but view them on separate screens? Answer Yes, the crude way to do this is to re-size excel to span both screens and then re-size each workbook independently and have each sit in the area of excel on each screen It appears...

script - Powershell one-liner to show process on same line as port using netstat issue

First I just want to make sure user Erik Bitemo gets credit for the original code I'm using here. The output is what I'm looking for with one exception: One of the ports disappears and "System System5" show up in its place and I can't figure out why it's happening. Goal: Show all TCP (Listening) and UDP ports and the process associated with each on same line. One liner being used: $nets = netstat -bano|select-string 'LISTENING|UDP'; foreach ($n in $nets) { $p = $n -replace ' +',' '; $nar = $p.Split(' '); $pname = $(Get-Process -id $nar[-1]).ProcessName; $n -replace "$($nar[-1])","$($ppath) $($pname)"; } Example Output: TCP 0.0.0.0:135 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING svchost TCP 0.0.0.0: System System5 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING System TCP 0.0.0.0:623 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING LMS The port that it changes is 445 but I have no idea why it's changing only that one when the rest of the ports are working as intended...

windows 7 - Chrome is displaying international characters instead of English; how can I fix this?

I've run into a problem with Google Chrome on my laptop (my desktop machine, apparently an identical Windows 7 installation doesn't have the problem). On some sites, Chrome fails to render text correctly, instead substituting seemingly random characters. Here's an example from the Opera browser web site, http://www.opera.com/ : (Text correctly rendered by Firefox) (Text incorrectly rendered by Chrome) I've reinstalled Chrome, and checked that the fonts are defaults; Encoding is set at auto-detect (UTF-8). What else can I do to fix this? Thanks. Answer The Win7 has implemented a new font system. I dont totally understand it yet, but problems like this can occur when a font is replaced, or is just working in place of the provided font items. Here is the only explaination I can do so far: The new fonts can have layers of typefaces in them, notice how Large thier file sizes are. These layers can have multiple fonts and bold and ital and even other fonts and languages in t...

security - How to schedule Motion detection

I've just discovered Motion and it works like a charm.. My only problem is that I'd like it to be active only during night-time, but there's no parameter for scheduling.. I think I could write a program that would control Motion via its "HTTP API" , but I was wondering if someone had already done that, or if there's an alternative solution. Thanks in advance :) Answer For this simple task, Motion's HTTP API can be used directly with wget or similar.. Straight from the FAQ : 0 9 * * * root /usr/bin/lwp-request http://localhost:8080/0/detection/start > /dev/null 0 18 * * * root /usr/bin/lwp-request http://localhost:8080/0/detection/pause > /dev/null

hard drive - How to shrink volume on an SSD?

How do I shrink an SSD partition? When I try to shrink the volume, the "available amount of space to shrink" is zero. I did a disk defragmentation (I know it's bad), but it still comes up with zero. Any tips or pointers? I am using Windows 7, Vertex 2 240 GB, MacBook Pro , NTFS, and I have about 70 GB used. I also turned off hibernation and turned off paging to reduce large files.

Now you should be able to ping guest windows 7 from host mac.

zoom - How to make Google Chrome honor my Windows DPI setting?

Google Chrome doesn't seem to respect my DPI setting in Windows. I run at 150 DPI, but Chrome ignores that, meaning that images and text are teeeeeeny tiny . I hit: Ctrl + + Ctrl + + to zoom in. Unfortunately every new tab , or new window , defaults to the 100% teeny tiny zoom level. Update: It's also important to note that you cannot click buttons in flash (e.g. YouTube videos), because Chrome mis-handles mouse coordinates. (Fixed 6.0.472.55) Is it possible for either: Chrome to respect my Windows dpi setting? Chrome to remember my zoom preference? Checked version: 4.1.249.1045 Half fixed While Chome still doesn't honor the Windows DPI setting, it does now remember your zoom level. Version: 5.0.375.55 Five-Eighths Fixed While Chrome still doesn't honor the Windows DPI setting, it does now offer a default "page zoom" option: Unfortunately there is no zoom level that matches my current DPI setting: 136% (131dpi). macos - Disabling the Driver Region on a Mac

So, this is the first time I try to watch a DVD disc on my (new) Mac and I wonder if I can keep it as fresh-new by not choosing any region and just play discs from anywhere . I understand the media industry made that lock for copyright and whatever, but do I absolutely have to choose a region to be able to play disks, even if I got original ones from different places? Why can I "change region" just 5 times, why even allowing changing? (new) In other words : How much would it cost us, end users, to have a region free DVD player? Also, on a side-note, I wonder how to disable the regular DVD Player. Answer First off I would verify that the disk actually works in something . Either a standalone DVD player or another computer, it doesn't matter just something . Next I would attempt to rip it off the disk using Mac the Ripper . Try different regional settings. If you can't find anything else that will play it, and you can't rip it, the disks themselves might be bad...

partitioning - Can I install Windows 7 in A: or B: partition names?

Some years ago (actually decades now), when Windows 95 (or even 3.11) came, "A:\" and "B:\" partition names were reserved to the old magnetic removable discs (also known as Floppy Disks ). However, today it is a forgotten standard and we don't see it embedded anymore on any new machines(actually, if you need to buy a floppy disc today you will spend more money that it was if buying a Flash card, at least in my country it is not easy to find it selling anywhere)machines. So I was wondering if these are still reserved on new version of Windows Systems (Vista, 7 or even on 8) and if I could use these partition letters to install another Operating System, use as a backup partition, work partition (with data and application files) or even to install my main Windows 7 system? It is still recommended to install Windows on "C:\"? I mean, should I use "C:\" for Windows to avoid application incompatibilities or something like this? Is there any additio...

IP address spoofing using Source Routing

With IP options we can specify the route we want an IP packet to take while connecting to a server. If we know that a particular server provides some extra functionality based on the IP address can we not utilize this by spoofing an IP packet so that the source IP address is the privileged IP address and one of the hosts on the Source Routing is our own. So if the privileged IP address is x1 and server IP address is x2 and my own IP address is x3. I send a packet from x1 to x2 which is supposed to pass through x3. x1 does not actually send the packet. It is just that x2 thinks the packet came from x1 via x3. Now in response if x2 uses the same routing policy (as a matter of courtesy to x1) then all packets would be received by x3. Will the destination typically use the same IP address sequences as specified in the routing header so that packets coming from the server pass through my IP where I can get the required information? Can we not spoof a TCP connection in the above case? Is thi...

windows - Is there a command that allows me to set a prefered IP Address for an adapter?

I've got some customers who should use a specific IP in their network adapter, but manually setting it is a pain sometimes. So I would like to know if there's a shell command / batch that allows me to set it without having to open "Network" -> "Adapter Setting" -> "Ipv4" -> "Ip Address". Answer Source The command is: to change IP and default gateway: netsh int ip set address "local area connection" static 192.168.0.101 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.254 1 to change DNS: netsh int ip set dns "local area connection" static 192.168.0.254 primary This is assuming 3 things. 1) The network adapter you're trying to change the IP for is "local area connection". It could also be "local area connection 2" or "wireless network connection". Look in your control panel for the correct name 2) The IP you want to set is 192.168.0.101, change this to whatever IP to want to use. 3) The default gatew...

Error in installing Windows SDK (Newer version already installed)

I am trying to install the Windows SDK on my Windows 7 64bit machine. But during the process of installation it gave me an error. I reviewed the log and it seems that it is due to a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 runtime is already installed (10.0.40219 is installed compared with 10.0.30219, which is available in the package). Maybe it's not compatible or it is having another issue. I can uninstall this package and install the older one from the Windows SDK, but in the case that it wasn't the issue, how can I return this package? Windows Update? Answer I ran into the same problem. The solution is to uninstall "Microsoft Visual C++ Compilers 2010 Standard - enu - x86", but there's no entry in Control Panel/Programs and Features to do this. Additionally, you may need to uninstall: Microsoft Visual C++ Compilers 2010 Standard - enu - x64 Note : that there are 2 spaces between the words C++ and Compilers. The way I figured it out was by doing a registr...

Windows Event Logs: Task Category

I have been scouring the internet for a formal definition of this piece of the Windows Event Logs. How is the category determined? Is there a set of standard values for this field? Can an application create its own Task Category? Answer Looking into .NET's EventLog and EventLogEntry classes should give you a clue, especially the latter's Category property: Each application (event source) can define its own numbered categories and the text strings to which they are mapped. The Event Viewer can use the category to filter events in the log. Additionally, as the page on Event Categories states: Categories help you organize events so Event Viewer can filter them. Each event source can define its own numbered categories and the text strings to which they are mapped. The page shows you how your app (which would be the Event Source) can define its own Event Categories. You can get some useful tips about getting that example to work on Win7 and Server 2008 R2 here . This Dr. Dobb...

encryption - if one doesn't care about protecting a gpg secret key, is it still as secure as using gpg --symmetric?

Each of Alice and Bob is using gpg just to protect his/her own personal files and not using it as a way to send encrypted text to others. Alice has generated a key ( gpg --gen-key ) that she uses to encrypt/decrypt her personal files ( gpg --encrypt --recipient="Alice Personal" alice.secrets.txt and gpg --decrypt alice.secrets.txt.gpg ). She knows that in order to read and write to alice.secrets.txt.gpg in her another computer, she needs to export her key (both public key and private key) to her second computer, using commands like: gpg --armor --export "Alice Personal" > alice.personal.public.key.txt gpg --armor --export-secret-key "Alice Personal" > alice.personal.private.key.txt and gpg --import alice.personal.public.key.txt gpg --import alice.personal.private.key.txt So she decides to put her encrypted personal files ( alice.secrets.txt.gpg ) and her key ( alice.personal.public.key.txt and alice.personal.private.key.txt ) on a cloud sync servi...

Windows 10: Scheduled tasks with workstation lock/unlock not being triggered

I'm running Windows 10, and trying to get a pair of scheduled tasks working. These tasks are set to run on workstation lock and workstation unlock, and execute a script that remotely locks or unlocks an adjacent arch-linux workstation. This is accomplished via the WinSCP command-line interface, WinSCP.com, and its built-in scripting ability. These scrips are working just fine - I can invoke them manually to the desired effect. I can even right-click the tasks I've set up and click 'run', and observe the desired effect. The problem is that the workstation-lock and workstation-unlock events don't appear to ever be triggered, when actually locking and unlocking the workstation. This same set of scheduled tasks worked as expected under Windows 7. Based on answers so far, I can get the tasks to run as expected if I check the "Run only when user is logged on" box, but this has the undesired side effect of causing a visible command window to appear when the tasks...

troubleshooting - Why would sound suddenly stop working on Windows 7?

I'm running Windows 7 RTM on a laptop and sometime between 7pm and 9:30pm tonight my sound stopped working. I was away from the computer at the time and watched a youtube video with sound just before leaving, so I know the system was in working condition to start with before it went into sleep mode. I've tried installing latest drivers, doing a system restore to last night's restore point, and rebooting multiple times. The headphone jack doesn't work either. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the event viewer either. The sound isn't muted (in either hardware or software) and really I'm just completely stumped. Far as the OS is concerned, sound should happen. Just nothing comes out of the speakers. Anything else I can look into and test or are my speakers/sound card just dead? EDIT: Apparently another reboot and a full shutdown was all it needed to start working again. Answer Don't know much about any issues particular with Windows 7, but you...
