windows 10 - Mouse cursor on multiple screens with different PPI

I'm using a 4K display along with a Full HD display with both almost the same physical size and it brings some mouse cursor problems to me working with it on the default Windows settings. As the mouse movement speed depends on the pixels, it's very slow on the 4K display and very fast on the Full HD display. Is there a windows setting or application to move the mouse depending on the visible distance and not the pixels? Another problem is the virtual wall between the screens I can't move the cursor from the upper half of the 4K screen to the Full HD screen: How is it possible to virtually stretch the cursor transition area of the Full HD screen to the one of the 4K monitor? The smallest problem, nevertheless painful, is the cursor size which varies between the screens. Is there a way to keep the same visual mouse size on both screens?

How can I stop Bing Bar from showing up in Windows Update

How can I stop the Bing Bar from continuing to show up in Windows Update. I have selected "Hide update" on it many times, but it eventually comes back. I do not have the Bing Bar installed on my computer. Answer This question crops up frequently . Some Windows updates keep returning no matter how many times you select to hide them. There are two ways that this can happen: You select to hide the entry, and it remains hidden, but a new, completely different entry is shown that is either related to the first one, or a newer version of it. This can be seen in the image below where Bing Desktop 1.2 has been hidden, then Bing Desktop 1.3 was shown as a different update and had to be hidden separately. You select to hide the entry, but later when it is updated, it is reset and is shown again because it is new. This is the case for Bing Bar in the image below. Ostensibly, if you didn’t want it the first time, then you probably don’t want it later, but the rationale is that you may

windows xp - XP 100% CPU on Login, by random processes

I have a serious issue on my Windexs XP machine. When I start it up it takes ages to login, then when I bring up task manager I find that its running at 100% CPU However, the process taking the CU are random (and there are usualy about 4 of them). They change a bit, but the CPU never drops below 100% at all. I have to hit the reset button and try boot again to resolve the issue, usually it takes two or three times to get a login without the problem, and then I just put the machine in standby mode when I'm not using it. I can't remember when this started happening, but its deffo more than a year ago. I know its not a virus ... What could it be ? Driver issue ? Any suggested paths for resolution would be appreciated. Cheers, Ro

How do I disable certain folders from appearing in my IMAP client when using Gmail?

I'm using the newest version of Gmail, as far as I know, and there used to be the option in Settings -> Labels that said "Show in IMAP" next to label/folder names. This option is no longer there, unfortunately. How do I hide specific labels/folders, e.g. All Mail, from Thunderbird, my IMAP client? In both Firefox 17.0 and Chromium 20.0.1132.47 on Ubuntu 12.04, without an extensions, these options do not appear, so it doesn't appear to be a browser issue. In the past, I had to enable "Advanced IMAP Controls" in Settings -> Labs for the "Show in IMAP" controls to appear, but according to this post , those controls "graduated" and should appear under Settings- > Labels. What can I do to show or hide specific folders in IMAP? Answer It's still there. From Gmail, hit the Gear icon on the right side of the screen (underneath your user name). That will pop open a menu which has a "Settings" link. From that page, click on

windows 10 - Connected to 2 monitors but one is blurry

EDIT : Monitor 1 resolution-2560 x 1440 (recommended) Monitor 2 resolution: 2048 x 1080 (there is no recommended resolution and the same resolution option as monitor 1 is not available) Laptop resolution: 1920 x 1080 (recommended) Laptop details in attachment. I am using a DELL docking port with a lightning USB, reg type: K20A001 Connected my DELL laptop to TWO DELL monitors. They are the exact same monitors. One monitor has the Display settings option as 125% recommended whereas the other has 100% recommended and does not have the 125% option. My monitors have been replaced recently and this issue was not found in my previous monitors or my monitors at home. ISSUE -> The monitor with 100% recommended display setting is blurry and flickers. The task bar is not displayed in full and the time on the extreme right is cut. IT guy worked on my laptop for two whole days and found nothing. He even replaced the faulty monitor to a brand new one and NOTHING. He thought I might have run out

Close command prompt after executing batch file

I have this in a .bat file (windows 7): taskkill /F /IM CouchPotato.exe TIMEOUT /T 5 CouchPotato.exe exit (The couchpotato tends to crash alot.) The command prompt stays open until the process ends. Is there a way to close it after the process has excecuted? I tried /silent after the .bat shortcut, but doesn't work.. Answer Run your application with start . This command returns immediately. start CouchPotato.exe See also How do I create a Windows Batch file that does not show the Command Prompt when executed? Or, alternatively, how about not having a command prompt show at all? See How to run a batch file without launching a "command window"?

mac software to merge folders

Today, again , I'm faced with troubles merging folders on the mac . But this time I don't want to discuss / try to solve the issue with finder . So, just wondering once more, anyone have a good software out there, to recursively copy files from one folder to another without killing the destination? Answer I use SyncTwoFolders and I've never had a problem with it. Just be sure you have the options configured the way you want them before you start or you could unintentionally lose data. There is also FileSync which I have less experience with, you can also accomplish the same thing using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! .

How to get my Desktop Icons back in Vista?

Yesterday I restart my laptop and all my desktop icons dissapear, however the Desktop folder is ok. I have done all the tricks I have found and nothing seems to work. I have tried this -Rclick on desktop -> personalize -> Desktop icons -> default -Check the registry for a missing explorer.exe value -Uninstall Stardock Fences Thanks in advance.

macos - How do manually mount hard drive on mac?

My mac recently gave up and I'm trying to salvage whatever data I can from the hard drive. I was able to boot using the OSX Installation CD and fire up Disk Utility that basically told me that the drive could not be repaired and I need to format it. My question - how can I manually mount it (from Terminal) and try to recover some of my data? I figured that if Disk Utility can see it, perhaps I could too. Thanks.

How to factory restore Windows 7 to prepare to sell laptop

I have a laptop that came with Windows XP. I upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out, and am planning on selling the laptop. Unfortunately, I think the Windows 7 upgrade disc got accidentally thrown out when I was throwing some old software out. I was planning on doing "Darik's Book and Nuke" to wipe everything, but then I would have no way to get Windows 7 back on it legally. Is there any way I can restore Windows 7 to a clean install, and then "wipe unused space" with a disk utility to protect my information? I do have the Windows XP factory restore disc that came with the laptop, but it will obviously sell easier and probably for more with Windows 7 on it. Any suggestions? Thank you. Answer You could contact Microsoft and order replacement Windows 7 media: If you are in North America, the Microsoft Supplemental Parts team can help you obtain any of the following: Service packs on CD Replacements for Microsoft software or hardware Product media exchanges (CD

windows 7 - Imaging/graphics apps leave ghost processes

Summary Recently put a clean install of Windows 7 x64 on a laptop. Now all imaging-related apps seem to hang on close, approx. one time out of every 10 runs. Problem details I close an imaging app (Photoshop CS5 x64, Photoshop CS5 x32, or Irfanview 4.30). Approximately one out of ten times, the app window will close, but the process will remain running, visible in the Processes tab of the Task Manager. These processes use minimal CPU ( < 1% ) and does not interfere with future instances of the application (Photoshop or Irfanview can be opened again while the hung process is present). This does not happen with any other apps than those mentioned above. Update For Irfanview, this will happen 100% of the time if the Save for Web plugin is used, and then the program is closed via the Esc key. Update 2 Found a related topic here , although no solution was found. Update 3 This behavior does not appear on Windows XP. Tested with clean installs of Windows 7 x64 SP1 Ultimate, Windows XP SP3

hard drive - Desmistifiying SATA hotplug

I have a BIOS that has an option to enable hot-plug on individual ports. I have a sliding enclosure for HDD and SSD (nothing more than a pass-trhu to power and a sata port) that allow me to cut power to the drive before physically moving it. I would love the convenience of inserting and removing HDD/SSD there without shutting down the computer every time. But while researching about SATA hotswap, out of expensive enterprise solutions, there is zero reliable information . I tried even looking at patents. I can't find a single reliable source that tells me how reliable/unreliable is hotswapping on the consumer world. So, I do have support in my bios, motherboard and enclosure. The drivers I've never seen mentioning hot-pluggable on the specs, even on the enterprise ones. How much risk of data loss will i be facing for this convenience? Then, hardware aside, there is the software issue. Do i need support on the OS? and is there any AT command to unplug the drive that must be issu

windows xp - Building a Mac/PC Network in a Dorm with Network Restrictions

I have been a Windows XP user for the last few years, but I recently bought a 15'' MacBook Pro for research purposes. I would like to set up a no-hassle Mac/PC Network at home so that I can access the internet on both computers and hardware between computers (i.e. a harddrive, or a mouse/keyboard with Synergy ). Unfortunately, I live in a dorm with silly network restrictions so a solution is not straightforward. In particular: The dorm has a wired and wireless network, both which provide an internet connection. The wired network provides way faster internet (download speeds of 15 MB/s vs. 2 MB/s on wireless), so I would like to somehow exploit this, at least on my PC for Bittorrent :) Multiple devices can connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" each other on the network (so software like Synergy would not work). Only 1 MAC address can connect to the wired network at a time. Ideally I would just connect a wireless router to the wired network and then have bot

Set Default Paste Format In Microsoft Office Products

I want to change the defaults for pasting in Microsoft Office. Right now, it appears to default to keeping the source formatting, but I'd like to set the default to match the destination formatting. I know how to right-click and select the desired type for each paste job, but I'd like to be able to use my hot keys (CTRL-V) or just right-click and Paste.

How to cancel updates in Windows 10?

So windows 10 has this annoying habit of downloading updates over WiFi connections not marked as metered connections. I have to connect to a limited WiFi hotspot, and by the time I set the connection to metered, some updates had already started downloading. So I went to services.msc and stopped windows updater. Now when I go to Settings->Update and Security->Windows Update, It says "Updates are ready to download". That is just fine, but when I click on "Details" of the updates, some updates still shows 'Downloading'. My bandwidth is not getting used up by this, but a process called "From Microsoft Download/Upload host" is constantly using high amounts of my CPU power, causing heating and battery drain. How can I solve this problem? I believe totally cancelling all ongoing updates will solve this, but don't know how to do it. Answer You should use the 3rd party tool called Windows Update MiniTool which allows to select which updates can

Change file type descriptions in Windows 7

I am using a certain file type (.QTZ) which I have successfully linked to an application. When I double click, the correct application starts. However, in Windows Explorer, it still says it is a "QTZ File". How can I change that type description? I have found the "Default Programs" tab in the Control Panel, but it only lets me edit associations, not file types. Answer Launch regedit . In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT , find your extension (you just have to type . q t z ). Example with .ods file: Look for the Data of the (Default) value (in my case, opendocument.CalcDocument.1 , but in yours, something related to your application), and find this name in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT again, by typing the first letters. Example with opendocument.CalcDocument.1 : Change the Data of the (Default) value to the description you want. Close regedit. To see your changes appear, you can either reboot, or change the default association of some file by choosing "Open with > Choose defau

Is there anyway to identify which email alias a sender used for me if it was listed as a BCC (Outlook)?

I'm using Outlook 2010 but my buddy, using Outlook 2003, doesn't seem to be able to see it either. I know that if I open the email (external to viewing pane) and go to the [File] tab, then hit the [Properties] button, I can view the contents of the "Internet headers" but that doesn't have BCC information in it. According to section 3.6.3 in RFC 2822 (internet standard for e-mail messages) there are three ways in which the "Bcc:" field should be implemented: when a message containing a "Bcc:" field is prepared to be sent, the "Bcc:" line is removed even though all of the recipients (including those specified in the "Bcc:" field) are sent a copy of the message. recipients specified in the "To:" and "Cc:" lines each are sent a copy of the message with the "Bcc:" line removed as above, but the recipients on the "Bcc:" line get a separate copy of the message containing a "Bcc:" l

hard drive - Is my HDD on the verge of failing?

I have a 10 year old machine that I'm using as a small home theater server, and would like to know if the HDD is about to fail. I ran the following smartctl --all test and some of the error values seem very high. Answer You can't rely to much on SMART information to tell you if a drive is going to die. Its not useless, but its not something that can be generalised (different drives have different "normal" values) and studies have shown that SMART values are not nearly as highly correlated with pending failures as one might hope. (See here and here ). You may be able to run some SMART tests to test your drive which can tell you if its failing (SMART drives often have self tests), and if SMART does say the disk is failing or has failed, be inclined to back up ASAP and write off the drive as dying. 10 years IS a long time for a drive, so best practice would be to replace it anyway.

How to delete Windows.old in Windows 8

It seems to be a common thing that a Windows Update creates a Windows.old folder under C:\Windows.old My question is now, can it be deleted with Windows 8 and how can I do that? If I try to manually delete it in Windows Explorer it does not let me, a permissions issue. Answer The Windows.old folder is a backup of the previous installed windows. It can be removed after some weeks when you think that all configurations are migrated correctly to Windows 8. See Microsoft statement The folder can be removed with the Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) program, that can be found by typing "Disk Cleanup" in the Modern UI. Choose Clean up System Files . Then check the Previous Windows installation(s) , click OK and confirm with "Delete Files". Then the folder should be removed.

Can DisplayPort carry USB?

Are there any plans in current or future DisplayPort implementations to carry USB? I'm thinking that you could have your keyboard/mouse plugged into your monitor and then two DisplayPort inputs. The input would get routed over DisplayPort and your monitor would act as a keyboard-mouse switch. Answer Of course it can . The feature is called USB over AUX , since the DisplayPort v1.2 Standard specifies this in its Link Layer. You'll find information in the DisplayPort 1.2 press release : Another new feature is the ability to support high-speed, bi-directional data transfer, allowing USB 2.0 or Ethernet data to be carried within a standard DisplayPort cable. For DisplayPort v1.2, the maximum data rate of this “AUX” channel has been increased from 1 Mbps (Mega-bit-per-second) to 720 Mbps, providing suitable bandwidth for USB 2.0. The DisplayPort cable can therefore support USB data to/from the display to support Display USB functions, in addition to sending the video and audio inf

windows - how to have renderdocui.exe run GTAVLauncher.exe while script hook v dll is in the game directory?

I get this error when I am starting the GTAV game using RenderDoc (v 0.27) and I have Script HooK V dll in the GTAV game directory (which is for game modding). I get this error: win32_network.cpp( 344) - Warning - Failed to connect to localhost:38921 Seems both Script Hook V and RenderDoc are trying to access the same port and race condition happens. How can I resolve this problem? Latest version of RenderDoc (v 0.33) doesn't have this problem. Latest version of RenderDoc: The version of RenderDoc I am using: When I use Script Hook V separately (meaning I start the GTAV game by clicking on GTAVLauncher.exe not from renderdocui), this is the log I receive: // GTA V SCRIPT HOOK (build Dec 15 2016, v1.0.944.2) // (C) Alexander Blade 2015-2016 [18:36:37] INIT: Started [18:36:37] INIT: Success, game version is VER_1_0_944_2_NOSTEAM [18:36:37] INIT: Registering script 'NativeTrainer.asi' (0x00007FF9AFD7A3C0) [18:36:38] INIT: Registering script 'Nice Fly.asi' (0x00007F

Embed an Excel document into a worksheet in another Excel document

I have an Excel document in which I want to add another Excel document. I hoped it would be possible in the same manner how we used to embed a Word document in another, using the Insert → Object option. But this doesn't seem to work with Excel. Is there any solution to this? Answer I'm not sure what issues you are having, but my copies of Excel 2007 and 2010 both allow you to insert another Excel sheet as an object. To do it, you need to click on the Insert tab in the ribbon, and then click Object . This will open a dialog window allowing you to set the object to insert. Click on the Create from file tab to insert your specific file. Click Browse button and select the file you are looking to insert. There are a few check-boxes for options. Link to file will put a reference to the file, so any edits made to the embedded workbook will be reflected on the original. Display as icon will show an Excel icon with the name and location of the original file. Leaving this unchecke

Hide the logon screen windows 10 IOT

I want my system to boot straight into an application with no other UI elements. I have set the system to boot using the Custom User Interface and boot straight into the application but during the login process it shows the user name, picture, loading "dots" and background. Is there any way to just have this as a blank screen?

Convert Windows XP x32 physical machine to guest virtual machine

Possible Duplicate: Disk2vhd,convert my PC to Hyper-V Virtual Machine I've just bought a machine running Windows 7 x64 Professional. I want to use this to run my old XP x32 installation as a virtual machine using Virtual PC. My plan is to create images of the 2 current XP drives using Disk2vhd . Then install these drive images in an XP virtual machine. Should this work? Will I need to activate XP on the virtual machine? Will 1 GB be enough to run the virtual machine (16 GB available on host)? Are there any other pitfalls of which I need to be aware?

login - How do I prevent the Welcome Screen / Lock Screen from appearing after idling in Windows 8?

I'm running Windows 8 Enterprise x64 (RTM), and I cannot figure out how to disable to the lock screen that appears after the computer has been idle for 10-15 minutes. I've tried the following, and none of them work: 1) Disabling Screen Saver "display logon screen" option. 2) Disabling the Power Plan "require a password" setting. 3) Changing the lock screen policy: None of these disable the lock screen, it still appears after 10-15 minutes. The only setting that has any affect at all is changing the policy (#3 above), but it merely disables the Welcome Screen image (the one that you click/drag/type on to get to the lock screen ). But you still end up at the lock screen and have to re-enter your password. Short of disabling the user login completely, is there any way to disable the lock-on-idle setting in Windows 8? Answer After hours of frustration trying to figure this out, I finally discovered the solution. The problem seems to stem from the fact that I&#

Using a subset of monitors for remote desktop

I tried to find an answer to this a few years ago, but it seemed it wasn't possible then (I suspect it isn't now either! - but what the hell!) I have a three monitor system, that I mostly use for remote desktop. However occasionally it would be useful to have remote desktop on two monitors and use the other monitor for the local machine. I know it is possible to have a single monitor full screen, or to stretch an RDP session across monitors, but this loses things like snapping etc. P.S. this is a duplicate of this thread, but that was a couple of years ago, I'm hoping things have changed. Answer The situation hasn't changed. Your only two choices when using multiple monitors through an RDP session are the /span and /multimon options. /multimon will treat each screen as a separate display just like you would have on the host. You get snapping/clipping capabilities, but the downside is you can only use ALL of the screens for this. /span allows you to use only two o

Inheritable permissions checkbox doesn't show up in windows 8 GUI

The system language is Chinese but the problem is just as simple as that, no checkbox. How can I change permissions for the subfolders and the all the conteined files? I tried C:>icacls "C:MyFolder" /grant User:(OI)(CI)F and >icacls "C:\MyFolder" /grant Users:(OI)(CI)F without result.

Using MS Word Table Styles to Change Font Size

I made a custom table style using MS Word 2007. I set the font to be Arial 10pt and to apply to the whole table. The font changed to Arial, but the font size of my table did not change. When I go to Modify Table Style again the drop-down for the font size is blank (i.e. no size is selected). Attempting to change the font size via the drop-down or Format->Font button has no effect. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks. Answer This is apparently a bug that Microsoft isn't going to fix.

windows 7 - Can I fully disable my PCIe Video/Graphics Card per BIOS/Software?

Because of a quite noisy fan of my HD6770 I was wondering, if I could fully disable my video card through BIOS or even some Software/Windows. Switching to Intel I7 2600 internal video helped already with the noise, but it would be great to have the HD6700 only build in, but not activated/powered. So that the fan could stay compleatly off. Of course, I could just remove the video card, but I would like to avoid that. Is there any way? My Mainboard is an ASUS P8H67-M Pro, with Intel I7 2600 and ATI HD6770 Answer Short answer: If you write the software yourself, then yes. Using existing software, no. Searching for "power down PCIe card" shows that your are not the only one looking for this capability. Some of the results, for example " Switch off the discreet PCI-e vidcard " (what a sweet typo!) state that it is impossible, but do not back this up. Others such as Anyone know how to power-off a PCIe slot? (eg. video card) approach this more seriously, but did not suc

video - Burn a season of AVI's to a non-DivX DVD player

I know this is a noob question, but I downloaded a season of my favorite show since all the DVD's mysteriously went missing. I want to burn them to blank DVD's but I'm not sure how I can do that in a way that my DVD player will use it. Can someone tell me how to do it? Answer DVDFlick is free, supports a bunch of codecs/containers, and uses ImgBurn to write the disc image. The settings are a bit confusing but there are helpful tooltips right next to most of them. I've used this program to burn ancient DivX files, Theora/Vorbis videos, movies in Matroska containers, etc. all to standard video DVDs without problems. It takes a while though, depending on your machine's specs, it takes a good 2 hours to burn a 2hr movie on my 3.4GHz Pentium D machine.

How do I migrate my Windows desktop to a VirtualBox VM?

I have VirtualBox 4.3.6 and True Image 2014 Premium with Universal Restore. I've read a lot about different methods but I'm not sure where to start, or what will suit my needs. Directly from VirtualBox wiki: Windows installations, unlike Linux, cannot easily be moved from one hardware to another. This is not just due to Microsoft's activation mechanism but the fact that the installed kernel and drivers depend on the actual hardware. This is where Universal Restore could come in handy. It is a feature of True Image that allows backups to be restored to dissimilar hardware. I want a complete disk image backup of the system disk created with True Image before I do anything. I will then reformat the system disk. And then, instead of reinstalling Windows or restoring it from backup on the host, I would like to have it restored VirtualBox. Is it possible to go from TIB (True Image Backup) to VDI (Virtual Disk Image)? If not at all possible, can I image the system disk (with curr

windows 7 - How do you keep the DVD drive from opening when you get the message "please insert a disk into drive"?

In Windows Explorer, when I click on the drive that happens to be my cd/dvd drive, I get the message "please insert a disk into drive", which might be OK, but then the DVD drive opens and I have to close it. I consider this very rude and I do not like it. Is there a way I can keep the DVD drive from opening when it is empty and Windows tries to access it? Answer You can effectively stop the 'rude' auto eject behavior by disabling the built-in CD burning settings. Quick Solution: Set the following value in the Registry : [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoCDBurning"=dword:00000001 Solution: Open the Local Group Policy Editor ( gpedit.msc ). Navigate to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer . Find and double click the Remove CD Burning features setting. Change the setting to Enabled , and click Okay . Log off and then log back in. Before: Context menu (notice the B

windows - Should I put my page file on its own partition?

I have enough room on my OS hard disk to make a separate partition for the page file, but my power supply isn't enough to give it its own drive. Is it better to put the Windows page file on its own partition, reducing fragmentation of the other partitions but increasing disk seek time (?), or to put it on the OS partition> (Or one on each) Answer If you are only going to be using one disk, place the OS and the swap partion on the first partition. You want all of the OS and swap files as close to ring 0 as possible as this will optimize the OS to be as fast as possible. The suggestion from JT to force it to a fixed size is absolutely a good idea. The OS starts getting very slow when it has to scale this on the fly.

ruby on rails - What's the equivalent of Ubuntu's apt-get command on a Mac

I'm trying to install the Feedzirra gem to do some work with RSS feeds. One documented issue with the installation is the need to install libcurl3-dev to address a common error in the installation process. Is my MAC address public when browsing the Internet?

Possible Duplicate: Is your MAC address revealed when you hit up a website? Can anybody see my MAC address when I'm on the Internet? Also, where can I check my MAC address? Answer The MAC-address is part of the Link-Layer in the OSI Network Model. I wont go too deep in here, bottom line is, it's only used for communication in your local network, be it cabled or wireless. The point at which your computers MAC definitely gets lost is when it passes your router, the router only transmits the IP packet to "the Internet" . When connecting to the internet your router will not use your computers, but its own MAC address to forward the packet. This switcheroo happens on all routing points, so your ISP will take your packet, get the IP packet out and put it into another MAC packet and so on. However, if you are using IPv6 it might be possible that your IP Address can be generated using parts of your computers MAC address. The tools to check your MAC (and IP) addresses are d

networking - Taskbar Disappears Over Remote Desktop Connection When Outside Local Network

I've got a machine on my home network running Windows Server 2012 (Based on Win8). The problem is, my taskbar disappears completely. When I minimize an application rather than minimize to the taskbar it simply closes the window as small as it can as if the taskbar never existed (see photos at bottom). The problem first presented itself after I accessed the computer from outside my local network I'm using a Linksys router and mapping to the server IP, port 3389. After a restart the problem goes away, I will update when I have more information on how frequently or what may trigger. Photos: Answer I had the same issue. The explorer.exe task crashed and the result was the situation described in the question above. To solve this from RDP I used ctrl + alt + end (twice) then I selected the Task Manager option from the menu and from there I restarted the explorer.exe process by selecting File -> Run new task (I entered "explorer.exe" in the open text box).

Why shouldn't I attach laser printers or scanners to a UPS?

I have an FSP EP1000 UPS. The User's Manual says: CAUTION: NEVER connect a laser printer or scanner to the UPS unit. This may cause the damage of the unit. Why is this restriction? Answer Updated Why you shouldn't connect a printer to a UPS (Unless you accurately size the UPS for peak power requirements) When turned on, Laser printers draw a high current to heat up their fuser roller. A typical UPS cannot cope with such a spike. Descriptions of the problem by UPS manufacturers do not go into details. The problem may be one or other of The initial inrush current at start-up, This can be seven or more times the average operating current of the printer. Initial power-on when the fuser is heated to the temperature needed to fuse toner. Subsequent re-heating of the fuser may be periodic or may occur when the printer switches from and idle state to full-power to satisfy a print request after a period of inactivity. Fuser temperature is up to 200 °C (392 °F). Printer Information Fr

Windows Shortcut/Utility to switch between application windows

From using GNOME and MacOS, I'm accustomed to have Alt+` to switch between windows of one application and Alt+Tab to switch between applications. I have not yet found any setting or utility which would yield the same functionality on Windows (8). Do you have any tips? Answer There's no built-in way to switch between the windows of the same application. All top-level windows are displayed in Alt + Tab list. I mean if you have two instances of Notepad running, you'll see two windows of Notepad in Alt + Tab window list. If you activate two windows of the same application in row, you can switch between them with single Alt + Tab press. Additionally you can press Alt + Ctrl + Tab to display the list of windows, and then use arrow keys to select the required window; press Enter to switch to the window. You can also use mouse to select a window from this list. As an alternative way you can use Windows + T : each press activates the next button on the Taskbar (includin

installation - How can I install drivers before Windows boots?

If there's a bad hardware driver that is causing Windows to crash during startup, how can you update the driver? Do I need to make a boot disk? I have the driver installation disc that came with it and tried to boot from it; obviously that didn't work. Is there a way to do this? I'm not sure if it's indeed a bad hardware driver that's causing the crash, but I'm getting a BSOD with a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - among other things I want to try updating the drivers, but I can't get into Windows to do it the normal way. Answer Unfortunately, you may not be able to use this tool unless you have a license with SA from Microsoft, but, if you do (or have MSDN/Technet), the best tool for this is MS-DART (The Microsoft Diagnostic and Recovery Toolkit) This is the updated version of the old ERD Commander, and it allows you to make a lot of changes to the installed Windows on a system, including drivers.

Changing deleted partition back to NTFS without having to recover to another drive

Recently, I accidentally deleted a partition off of my external hard disk. I had a copy of Minitool Power Data Recovery left over when the same drive had become RAW about a year ago. When I selected lost partition recovery, it immediately identified my deleted partition and allowed me to access and recover the files that were there. My question is this. Is there any way to change the deleted partition back to NTFS without having to have a drive that you need to recover the files to and then move them back after formatting, as I don’t have any space left on either the computer or on my other external hard drive, so that I don’t need to buy a new one. The files on the disk were really important. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I appreciate any help in solving this crisis. Answer As someone who has used TestDisk to recover a corrupted partition table, I would highly recommend it. First of all, it is in your best interest to not utilize the disk until you have performed recovery. This

clone - How do I create an image of a hard drive?

I have an old laptop with a 20 GB hard drive, a spare 60 GB hard drive, and I'd like to convert the laptop to use the new larger drive by copying an image of the 20 GB drive onto the new drive and expanding the partitions. Once I get the image of the old drive onto the new drive I can manage the re-sizing of the partitions, but I'm not sure how to create the image of the hard drive, or how to copy that onto the new drive. One slight trouble is that I don't have my desktop machine here (I also don't have a laptop-drive to IDE converter) and so I'm going to need to do all of this using a live CD and an external USB hard drive.

What do I need to share a partition for both Windows & Linux?

I wand to use a partition and to be accessible for Windows 7 & Linux Ubuntu for read/write operations. Can anyone recommend me something? Answer Ubuntu can read/write to NTFS partitions (which are the default Windows 7 type). So just create a new partition as NTFS with Windows 7, and then mount it with Ubuntu when you're using Ubuntu. Details here . Summary: use ntfs-config under Ubuntu.

smart - Partition around bad drive sectors?

I've seen a lot of hard drives with only a few bad ( unrecoverable ) sectors (as indicated by SMART). Of course the proper thing to do with a bad drive is replace it, as there's a good chance of the drive crashing completely in the near future; I'm aware of that. However, in the interim, or for those who don't want to spend $70 to save data they don't value highly anyway (sigh, non-technical people), or just to get some use out of old hardware instead of throwing it away, I'm wondering if there's a way to identify where the unrecoverable sectors are ("where" meaning numerically, from 0 to the number of sectors on the drive), so I could stick a blank partition in that general area . Yes, this would involve low-level-formatting the drive and reinstalling the OS, of course. So: Would partitioning around unrecoverable sectors even be a workable way of reducing the disk of losing data? If so, is there a way to find the location of these unrecoverable s

motherboard - I can't update my BIOS because the current version is an empty string

I am using an Intel D945GCCR motherboard. I want to update the BIOS but the current installed BIOS has an empty string for the BIOS version which causes an error and prevents me updating. The error is " current bios version and update bios version does not match ". Due to this error i am unable to update bios. Any ideas how to solve this? Answer This problem occurs while board repairing. Who repair board has replaced an ic of someother board that's why the bios is not showing bios string.

Why can I get a virus or trojan from visiting a website?

I have seen these a lot lately. You click the link, and instant trojan. No need to download or anything. How is this possible? Is there a way I can scan the links before visiting to make sure I won't be infected? Answer To answer how it's possible: The site has some script that gets executed as you load the page. This is what infects your Windows PC - I'm not 100% sure of the details though, whether it downloads the code or just runs it. This page has an example of how it was done in one case. A vulnerable browser is also required, and virtually any popular browser is a vulnerable one as something running on a lot of computers is worth targeting. It will be Windows PC's for the most part that get infected as people run as admin's rather than restricted users. The reasons for this are many and varied. As Roger points out in his comment its popularity rather than any intrinsic weakness that's the main factor here: Windows is targeted more because it is more pop

windows - Can you launch Remote Desktop via URL?

Is it possible to have a URL that launches a remote desktop session? I realize it may be considered a security vulnerability for some, but the convenience would really save me a lot of time. I would like to have a hyperlink like: remotedesktop://example.org where clicking on it launches mstsc.exe with the target computer filled in (in this case with example.org ). How best to set this up? Answer You could use a custom URL protocol handler, but this would mean the URLs only worked on computers where you had set this up. I think you'd also need a program to handle taking the URL as remotedesktop://example.org and converting to /v:example.org - although a batch file could probably do this. linux - How can I quickly set up a lab with 802.1x wired authentication? (without a switch)

I want to experiment with 802.1x wired authentication and I don't have a switch with such capability. How can I quickly set up a lab for that purpose? (e.g. take a Linux machine and make it act like a switch with 802.1x wired authentication) Answer Answering my own question, for my future self (and others). I was able to get this quickly done as follows: Install Ubuntu on a laptop. We will use the ethernet NIC as the "internal network" and the wireless NIC as the "external network". Setup Ubuntu as a router that simply forwards traffic from the ethernet NIC to the wireless NIC. There are many guides in the Ubuntu community that help with setting up Ubuntu as a router. Install freeradius and test it (it's useful to run freeradius in debug mode to watch the logs). This guide can help: http://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/Basic-configuration-HOWTO Install hostapd and configure it for wired 802.1x authentication using the freeradius server (it's useful to ru

Disable recent files in Windows 10

In Windows XP I could disable recent files somewhere in the Start Menu configuration. But I have upgraded to Windows 10 and it seems they removed that. In Folder Options there are these entries: Show recently used files in Quick access Show frequently used folders in Quick access Unchecking these only hides recent files in Quick access, but they are still stored in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Then I tried enabling this policy in gpedit.msc User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Do not keep history of recent opened documents But it didn't work neither. Is there an easy way of preventing Windows 10 from storing links to recent files? Answer In order to disable the recent items it requires 2 actions. open Personalization in the Settings app. Click/tap on Start on the left side. Turn on or off to Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar for what you want. Source You can also set the following registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USE

onedrive - Can't sign in to Office and OneNote can't connect to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1

The OneNote issue Since I installed Windows 8.1 I can't open my OneNote notebooks stored on SkyDrive with OneNote 2013. When I try to open a notebook in OneNote, I get the following error: We can't get your notebooks right now. Please try again later. I can open them without trouble in the Modern UI OneNote app, but I can't open password protected pages there. Also if I try to open a notebook from a browser, I get the following error: We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it. I also cannot create new notebooks on SkyDrive: The specified location is not available. You do not have permissions to modify the specified location. Can it be fixed somehow? Or can I at least save a notebook to my hard drive without opening it in Office? The backup file got deleted with the Windows 8.1 installation. Edit: I tried reinstalling Office and unlinking then relinking my Microsoft account, but no luck. I also tried OneNote with my ot

Copy & Paste in Vista / Explorer broken (not MS-VPC)

On vista copy & paste has recently stopped working in "explorer" or whatever the hell they call their file manager, it is limited to only files / directories, copying text/graphics/random junk between apps works just fine. I do use MS Virtual PC, but the issue persists between clean boots. I am using total commander as a stop-gap atm, but its not ideal. nothing odd was installed recently, I have run a full scan on AVG & windows defender, uninstalled a load of junk that had been kicking around for a while, killing the explorer.exe processes & restarting them makes no difference also. When "cutting" a file, the icon goes semi transparent, then when pasting the cursor changes to the busy circle thing for a couple of frames, then reverts to the normal pointer... Any clue where to start looking for the problem? I would really rather not re-install, but it is looking inevitable atm, so go ahead & save my weekend!

windows - Cannot see computers on network

I have three Windows 10 machines on a network, on the same default network: WORKGROUP . One of them can see all three, call it Media-PC . The other two can only see each other but not Media-PC , call them desktop-1 & desktop-2 . I have turned on the following services, DNS Client , Function Discovery , SSDP Discovery & UPnP Service . Network discovery is running on all three machines. I can ping all three computers from each other. I cannot figure out why desktop-1 & 2 can't see Media-PC . Media-PC can see them but they can only see each other. Hope someone can help me with this. Answer Network discovery has since always been a painful subject in all versions of Windows, especially now when so many security fixes were applied. I have collected below all the fixes I know. You might try them one by one, undoing the ones which do not help. Homogenous account types All the computers must be logged-on with the same type of account. Meaning that all must have a Microso

macos - Mac OSX screencast solutions

I need to make some quick and simple demo videos of a web application. These videos will need to be embedded into help pages in the application, but can be externally hosted. As a startup without lots of funds, my preference is to find open source, free, or inexpensive solutions. However, if there are really excellent solutions that cost more, I'd like to know about them for future reference. I've seen some websites that claim to do this, but am not sure if they would be suitable for my needs. Any experience with services like screentoaster.com or screenjelly.com ? What software solutions are there? I'd like to do this on my snow leopard MacBook Pro. Answer Quicktime X, built in Snow Leopard is a convenient tool to produce screencasts ! You're running 10.6 so it's free for you. I guess it won't be hard to record them locally and later integer the videos into the pages with a web based video player (that's what i did) ! I've used it to make basics howt

multi boot - Should I make partition when setting up a RAID-1?

If I want to do RAID-1, and I also want to boot several different OSes (Windows 7, Linux) for example, should I perform the following steps? Create RAID-1 Mirror from BIOS. Use GParted to create several partitions. (I believe under GParted, I will see two disks, under which one should I create the partitions then?) Install Windows and then Ubuntu? Or is it better to create RAID-1 and install RAID-1 on the whole disk first, then resize the partition later for Ubuntu?

How do I remove Windows 7 installation from partition?

I want to remove Windows 7 installation from a partition WITHOUT destroying any other data on it using Windows 7 booted from another partition. The most obvious way would be to just delete the Windows directory, but I don't have permission to do that. When I open the security settings and try to change them, I'm told that access is denied and I can't move on from there. I'm using administrator account. So what do I do? UPDATE: In the meantime, I found this question asking the same thing, but the answer there doesn't help. Answer The most obvious way would be to just delete the windows directory, but I don't have permission to do that. When I open the security settings and try to change them, I'm told that access is denied and I can't move on from there. I'm using administrator account. The SIDs on the existing Windows directory won't be valid, so you'll have to reset the SIDs to the one present on your new Windows install. You can do th

windows home server - Can I make my PC backup and then sleep on demand with WHS?

I really hate the way that WHS backs up at a particular time in the morning. First of all I don't EVER want my computer turning on when I am not there. EVER . I have a Core-i7 laptop which literally could burn the house down quite easily if it were to turn on in a bag. I also don't ever want my PC to sleep unless I tell it to. I don't have hibernation or sleep enabled and this is the only way that WHS will sleep after a backup is complete. I know that Windows 7 has the ability to disable waking up when on battery power but it doesn't seem to work on my laptop . These are the possibilities (with wake timers left as default): 'Wake this computer for backup' ON - it turns on in my bag if i forget to turn it off - and stays on when the backup is complete. 'Wake this computer for backup' OFF - it backs up in the morning, but I need to leave the machine on all night. I say 'Backup Now' and then it backs up immediately. I can turn it off when its don
