macos - Where does Mac OS X store file association information?


I know there is a system preferences pane to manually modify the file associations in Mac OS X Leopard. However, I'm curious where does Leopard actually store these information?


I'm not interested in methods to change them. I want to know the configuration file or database (like registry in Windows) where those mappings are stored.

As toolbear mentioned, Doug Harris' answer is only partially correct.


The Launch Services Database file, which is where all of the information for all known applications and the types of documents they can handle is stored, is located in the following location:


Lion:


/private/var/folders/**/**/-Caches-/com.apple.LaunchServices-034501.csstore


Snow Leopard:


/private/var/folders/**/**/-Caches-/com.apple.LaunchServices-025501.csstore


Leopard:


/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-023501.csstore


The /private/var/folders/ folder is where the "secure" Caches and Temporary folders for each user are stored. The **'s in the path shown above will be something like /dl/dlXWtS5WH9SNboPxxrDIyE+++TI/, or another obscure character sequence to prevent guessing.


Note that the name com.apple.LaunchServices-025501.csstore is composed of the user ID (mine is 501) appended to the -025 suffix, which is unique to Snow Leopard. (In each version of OS X, Apple tends to change the distinguishing suffix used to prevent compatibility problems between different versions of OS X. You'll notice that Leopard used -023). Lion is using the -034 suffix.

Desktop reboots itself on sleep or hibernate

I have been using an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard for main home desktop workstation, operating Windows Vista x64. This computer has right from day one not been able to enter hibernate or standby; after Windows performs its final actions and brings the machine down, it would automatically revive itself for a reboot. Updating to the second latest BIOS (1201)has not helped (the latest BIOS revision would induce video refresh problems rendering it unusable). I have been reading related discussions on incidents similar to mine to no avail of a true workable solution. They appear to be more speculative guesses rather than actual knowledge on the inner workings of motherboard hardware. Does anybody have any electronic engineering experience on PC energy-saving standards to provide a more informed opinion how to go about getting this to work? Excel 2010: if( , , "") not treated the same as blank for pivot table group by date

I'm trying to group by date in an Excel 2010 pivot table. The column with dates (i.e., the one want to group by), should be the latest date of 2 other columns if neither is null, or blank. i.e., with a formula like: =IF(AND(A4 "", B4 ""), MAX(A4,B4), "") Normally, this "" in the IF() formula acts the same as an empty cell. In this case, it is preventing me from grouping by date in the Pivot Table. If I filter the date column by (Blanks) , then clear the contents of all those cells, then the pivot table does group by date ok. i.e., "" is not being treated the same as an empty cell.
