Windows Update doesn't work on Window 8.1

I bought new laptop and first thing I wanted to do was upgrading it to Windows 10 but whenever I use Windows Update -> Check updates it's just stuck on checking updates (5 dots are flying in and out whole time and nothing ever happens). Last update installed is KB3000850 in 2014-11-21 (it's new laptop) Last update check: Never Updates installed: Never I don't get any error. Nothing happens at all (as I said before dots are just flying and out for 30 minutes now). Answer I had the identical problem. The problem is that the Windows Update Agent is out of date and does not update itself first as it is supposed to do. To fix this you first download the most recent Windows Update Agent for your OS: Note: Microsoft support kept referencing an outdated page for kb949104 which is NOT the most current WU Agent. To update the Windows Update Agent: Open an elevated command prompt. Stop the Windows Update Agent by typing net stop wuauserv and hit Enter. Run the installer you down...

How to restore Command Prompt (Admin) to Windows 10 Right-Click Start Menu?

I nearly always launch an Admin command prompt on Windows 10 by right-clicking Start and then choosing Command Prompt (Admin) on the "Super User / Admin" context menu.... I don't know what the hell I managed to do, but Command Prompt (Admin) is gone now. I've tried various combinations of trying to drag shortcuts to the context menu, all unsuccessful. Anyone have any ideas on how to bring my beloved menu option back? I miss her so... Answer Do you mean that in the Context Menu when right-clicking Start Command Prompt (Admin) is missing? Try copying all the content from the folder C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX Into the folder C:\Users\{your username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX (replacing {your username} with your actual username)

How can I do a Cache Refresh in Google Chrome?

I don't know what exactly it's called, by cache refresh I mean, refresh the page after clearing its cache. I don't want to clear the entire browser cache. I can't seem to cache refresh my pages. In Firefox, I know it to be Shift +Refresh. In Chrome, I've tried Ctrl + R , Ctrl +Refresh, Alt +Refresh, Shift +Refresh but none of them work. Answer Push F12 or Ctrl + Shift + J to "Open Developer Tools" on Windows (On Mac: Cmd + Opt + I ) then you can right click on the refresh icon and select 'Empty Cache and Hard Reload' See: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12633425/chrome-browser-reload-options-new-feature The documentation says: For Windows and Linux: Shift + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R (screenshot): For Mac : Cmd + Shft + R ): Reloads your current page, ignoring cached content. Although some have reported this works, others have said it does not work correctly Your other options are: JavaScript Console The JavaScript Console is available in ...

linux - Swap partition size for 4GB RAM

I'm planning to install Ubuntu 9.04 version. How much space should I dedicate for swap partition. I remember setting it to double the RAM size when I installed long back. At that time my RAM was 256 MB. So I had set the swap partition to 512 MB. Answer I would say a good rule of thumb is indeed just as was mentioned above. 2 times the physical memory. Something to consider here, while it is possible to use a smaller swap partition, and it will suffice under most normal circumstances, if you want this system to be rock solid stable, I would indeed follow the 8 GB recommendation. In fact I recommend 2 * RAM + 1 MB so that there is absolutely room to swap out 2 entire copies of memory. This avoids the "shell game" scenario which can have negative performance repercussions. What this will do for you is guarantee a level of resiliency should you encounter an extraordinary event with your system. I've seen scenarios where applications behave badly in unattended environmen...

A good solution for home backups and file/print sharing

I’m looking for a cheap and reliable solution that allows me to share files and a printer in me home network. Raid support and very low power consumption would be nice extras. Should I go with a NAS or a hand-built home server? What about the software? Is Windows Home Server worth the price (compared against freely available open source alternatives)? Answer I use a DLink DNS-323 for this. It's a 2-drive NAS enclosure so you can buy your own hard drives. It's low power: it spins down when idle. And it has a USB port you can use as a print server. It can also act as a DHCP server if you need that for some reason. As of writing, I'm seeing it on Amazon for $128 AR. It also has RAID but I vaguely recall reading a few odd things with it. Something like you have to reformat both drives just to enable RAID-1.

video - Looking for temporal upsampling / motion interpolation software

I'm looking for something (prereably FOSS software) which can take an animation with N images as input, and which will output an animation with M frames, where M is in the range 2N to 5N or so. I believe the general technique is called "temporal upsampling" or possibly "inbetweening" (or "'tweening" for short). Note that it does need to make some effort to do motion tracking of things in the scene ("optical flow"); just fading ("dissolve") between keyframes isn't going to cut it. Googling "temporal upsampling" turns up any number of papers on the subject, but I've yet to discover any code/software (a gstreamer plugin would be perfect) I can just use to try the technique out. Any suggestions ? Additional information : "Motion interpolation" seems to be the more widely used name in the TV world for what I'm looking for. See this and the video here too. Interestingly, some cinephiles seem to hate ...

windows 7 - Visual Studio 2012 not repainting

Visual Studio 2012 is not repainting the screen when an exception is raised: My normal environment looks like this: It doesn't seem to matter whether VS is set to use hardware acceleration or not, or to show the rich client experience or not. I'm running on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit; VS 2012 Update 2. Graphics: NVIDIA GeoForce GT 220. UPDATE I selected Tools -> Import and Export Settings -> Reset all settings, and the problem was resolved. UPDATE 2 The issue has returned. UPDATE 3 I've since upgraded to Windows 8.1, and have not experienced the issue since. Answer Such issues are often caused by old graphic card drivers. Try to update them. If you still have issues, go into the VS2012 options and disable the hardware acceleration.
