windows 7 - What adds these Multicast IPs to the ARP table, as static entries?

(Similar to my previous question , but addressing a separate aspect which has gone unanswered.) I've seen this on my Windows 7 computer, and searches have turned up others in Vista/7 who have seen the same. However, I've not yet found (or perhaps have just missed) a good explanation for this. These two addresses are static in my ARP table, but I don't know what put them there: 224.0.0.22 01-00-5e-00-00-16 static 224.0.0.252 01-00-5e-00-00-fc static I know the ARP table gets updated whenever my computer talks to another system on the subnet, but those entries get added as "dynamic". "Static" entries only get added either by direct user intervention, or by software acting on behalf of the user. Is there any software known to add these particular addresses, or similar ones, to the table? Is this a normal part of the Windows 7/Vista installation, or would the entries have been added by other software along the way? Answer 224.0...

Windows Vista, Fails to boot in Safe Mode, or load past initial Login under standard conditions. HP Pavillion DV6000

I have an HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop, with Windows Vista loaded onto it. Here is my problem (Besides still owning Vista): When I try to boot the computer in "Standard" (no debug/Safe modes), the computer will load completely to the desktop, at which point it will simply "stall", the task bar is loaded, as are the icons, the clock, the start menu (which does not open), and the background picture. However, that is as far as it will go. After that, the "loading" cursor (the spinning circle merry-go-round of 'thinking') is a constant feature. When I try to boot up into safe mode, the computer will load all drivers completely, however, after loading crcdisk.sys (The final driver my computer has), it will not activate logonui.exe / Winlogon.exe /whatever Vista calls the Welcome Screen loader. I simply receive a black screen. Here was what was happening previously: The computer would BSOD past loading netio.sys , because one program must have botched and ...

windows - Mysterious folder on hard disk

I found a mysterious folder named e849ad3686d570a415 in the root of a hard disk. It contains a subfolder i386 which is inaccessible. Do I have malware on my PC? How can I delete this folder? Answer It's an installation folder. I have one with an "amd64" and "i386" folder. The contents of the "i386" folder look like the installation files for a printer driver. To take control of a folder see the answers to my question on the subject. Don't forget to turn "Simple File Sharing" off.

Converting a Windows 2000 Physical Machine to a Virtual Machine

What's the best way to create a virtual machine from an old Windows 2000 machine? I found VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 which is the last version to support Windows 2000. Are there any recommended alternatives? Are there any pitfalls I should expect? I'd like to run the VM on a Windows XP machine. Answer I've done this once, long time ago. The biggest pain was installing the correct drivers for the (virtual) hard disk. You must do it while this Windows installation still can boot on hardware. If your hardware uses AHCI, and your virtual machine uses ATA, you're in trouble, you need to convert your Windows to ATA mode before you move to virtual. Google is full of recipes for this, but I cannot recommend any, since none worked for me. So my advise is, make a copy of the disk, make sure you keep your original machine intact in case you need to reconfigure it again, install all needed drivers and try to boot in VMWare. Your success is very much dependent on y...

networking - IPv4 vs IPv6 priority in Windows 7

I have IPv6 connectivity through Hurricane Electric tunnel. Since IPv6 day this year, many services (google.com, facebook.com, etc.) enabled IPv6 on their main domains. On my Windows machine, IPv6 is preferred over IPv4. This means that whenever I visit Google, all traffic goes through my tunnel to Hurricane Electric, which raises the latency by more than 100%: C:\> ping www.google.com Pinging www.l.google.com [2001:4860:8005::68] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 2001:4860:8005::68: time=85ms Reply from 2001:4860:8005::68: time=84ms Reply from 2001:4860:8005::68: time=112ms Reply from 2001:4860:8005::68: time=86ms Ping statistics for 2001:4860:8005::68: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 84ms, Maximum = 112ms, Average = 91ms C:\> ping -4 www.google.com Pinging www.l.google.com [173.194.79.103] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 173.194.79.103: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=48 Reply from 173.194.79.103: by...

windows 7 - Video driver (I think) causes computer to freeze up, then continue

Laptop: Dell Studio XPS1340; Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 @2.4GHz; 8GB RAM; Intel 120GB SSD SC2BW120A4 GPU: (stock) NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G, Driver Version 340.52 (up-to-date) [more info avail if needed] Question: Occasionally when watching YouTube videos or playing StarCraft 2, the display will freeze - not changing at all - and the sound will either freeze with it (causing a single, jarring sound), or proceed really slowly (approx. x16 slower). After 1-3 minutes, it flickers and then continues on as if nothing happens. Only occasionally do I get a pop-up in the taskbar stating that the video driver was restarted. The entire computer becomes unresponsive, and I even get booted from games (from no networking). I do not remember this happening before I switched to SSD. I thought it was a faulty Crucial drive, but the issue persists with the Intel drive. If not SSD related, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening video-driver-wise? Thank you for your help!

windows - Time tracking tool for monitoring application usage

I want to know how I'm really using my computer, and where the time goes (I have an English paper due, and I intend on getting it done, it's 2:30 PM... no wait, it's 8:30 PM...). Which software can tell me: What programs I use, and when Within programs like Google Chrome or Firefox, which tabs I spend the most time on. (I would then know if I'm spending the time playing a game, or watching a movie on Hulu...) Answer Procrastitracker is free & suits your needs well. Is there a program that can give me a detailed report on how long certain processes run per day?

windows - Is there a way to run git within Powershell?

Is there a way to run git within Powershell? I have a Windows 7 box with msysgit. I'd like to have a single shell to also run all my git commands as well as play around with Powershell scripting. Answer Yes, when you run the msysgit installer make sure you choose the option to install git to be able to run from the Windows command prompt. This will add git to your PATH variable, which will make it available to PowerShell.

windows 8.1 - Consistent 100% disk access

I am a developer and on my work laptop it is entirely normal for my disk activity as shown by Task Manager to be 100%. With an average response between 7k-10k ms. This is under relatively simple load. My machine is a dell Latitude E5430, with 8 gb of RAM 2x4gb sticks and a ST10001LMo14 highbrid ssd/normal drive. This is running Win 8.1. The machine can be extremely sluggish even when operating at approx 20-40% CPU usage. Does anyone have suggestions of things I could do to possibly help get past what appears to be an IO bottle neck. How long is the Windows 8 activation period if I do not connect to the internet?

This is not a duplicate of this question , since the OP had already connected to the internet. I installed Windows 8 Consumer Retail and was not connected to the internet, and remain unconnected so it cannot automatically activate. How long can I use Windows 8 this way (never connected to the internet) and without activating the license? I want documentation links, not just an answer you think is true or read somewhere, back up any statements with clear documentation please. Answers related to Vista-W7 activation or commands used in Vista-W7 to check license status are not acceptable as Microsoft completely changed activation technologies for windows 8. Related Question here which shows some the limits in functionality in the New UI, I cannot find any limits using the desktop other than no Internet functions. windows 7 - ReadyBoost - How much space needed?

Just a simple question. How much could Windows 7 use effectively? ReadyBoost really helps, at least for me it's really working. I have got a simple Kingston pendrive, which is not bad, but it's not really fast. I'm thinking about a new pendrive, like OCZ Rally2 Turbo 8gb . Would that be enough for this purpose? Or should I get a bigger pendrive for ReadyBoost? (Forget SSD before you even comment. If you fund the upgrade, fine. But else, don't even think about such ridiculously high pried stuff.) Answer Microsoft recommend a total size for ReadyBoost of 1-3 times the size of your RAM for best effectiveness. (That said, I'm using 4-times the size of my RAM at home. It won't cause problems, but is unlikey to helping much beyond 3-times - but I've got nothing else I wish to use the SD card for, so may as well use it all up!) Before you consider replacing your current device, note the minimum requirements for a ReadyBoost device: Access time Read speeds of at l...

ubuntu - Missing files when Windows 7 returns from hibernate w/ dual boot

I have a dual-boot setup with Ubuntu (lucid) and Windows 7. I have the Windows file system shared on Ubuntu through Samba. Occasionally, I am working on Windows and my machine will go into hibernate (i.e. when the battery level is critical). By default, my GRUB settings boot me into Ubuntu. So when I get back to my PC, sometimes I just hop into Ubuntu instead of going back to Windows. However, if I write any files to the Windows file system during that Ubuntu session, the next time I do go back to Windows (which resumes from hibernate), those files are missing. Obviously, the state of the actual file system and the hibernate snapshot become out of sync, and Windows chooses the hibernate snapshot, overriding any changes I may have made thru Ubuntu. For now, I've disabled the hibernate option in the Windows power settings, but is there any utility I can use to get back some of those missing files? Answer Yes. In principle, it should be possible. Try a file recovery software. Recuva...

Stopping all automatic updates Windows 10

We've upgraded some machines to Windows 10 and realized there were some updates which updated as required. However, I realized there was no option available to stop the download similar to that on Windows 7 and 8.1. The only way I could stop the download was to stop the Windows Update service. My question is does anyone know of a way to stop auto updates or is stopping the service is the only solution? Answer if you have the Pro Edition, open group policy editor (gpedit.msc) search for the Configure automatic updates entry, located at: computer configuration → administrative templates → windows components → windows update and select Notify for download and notify for install . When Windows detects new updates it shows a toast notification . You can also use the troubleshooter from Update KB3073930 to disable some problematic updates, so that they are not installed again. This is the official way from Microsoft to prevent setup of unwanted updates and drivers. But there is a 3...

windows xp - Outlook Emails are Sent but stored in drafts (Not what you think)

I work in a corporate environment (6,000 users). We have 1 user whose Outlook 2007 mailbox is acting up. If the user writes an email and sends it before the Autosave feature kicks in, the email is sent. if the user writes an email and it takes longer than Autosave (3 minutes) her email is saved to drafts. If she send it, the email is sent but the email will no delete from the drafts folder. The Backstory The user was accidentally deleted as an current employee. (In our environment you are never actually deleted, your account is just sent to a 'recycle' bin.) After the user was restored, about 2 weeks later, her machine was due for replacement. The machine was replaced and that is when the errors started appearing. Additionally her maiden name from 4 years ago showed up in office communicator. If the user logs into a machine that she logged into previously BEFORE her account was 'deleted' no issues exist. If a user logs into a new machine, the problem returns THEN the p...

greasemonkey - How do I install a userscript?

What are the steps to install a userscript for any of the major browsers? This question is for the benefit of those trying to get the minimal theme working. One browser per answer please. Answer Detailed instructions are available on the Stack Apps Site How to install user scripts in Chrome There are two methods for installing UserScripts in Chrome. The first is to install the TamperMonkey extension, which makes installation simple and easy. The second is to follow these instructions below: Note: As of Chrome 35 (late May 2014), downloaded user scripts cannot be installed using the second method. Please use the TamperMonkey extension. Click on the link to the .user.js file found in the post Look for the confirmation at the bottom of your browser and click Continue . Chrome will warn you that you can't install the script. wireless networking - Internet connection sharing over WIFI without modifying LAN adapter IP address

I have an Android phone (non-rooted Sony Ericsson ST15i) that I'd like to connect to the internet via my laptop's wired Ethernet connection (linked to my university network, that uses an authentication proxy to connect to the internet, with a fixed IP address assigned to every dorm room). This wired connection shows up on my system as the default "Local Area Connection". I tried a few things for this: Virtual Router Manager - in order to get the Android phone to recognise the laptop as a WiFi hotspot, since it can't connect to ad-hoc networks. But the application fails to connect giving me the error "Virtual Router could not be started". Internet connection sharing in Windows 7 - tried setting the "Wireless Network Connection" to share the internet connection from "Local Area Connection", but this gave me a popup saying that the LAN adapter will be set to the IP address 192.168.137.1 - which is different from the IP address assigned t...

windows 8.1 - Did my NVIDIA card permanently break by itself? Or can I fix it?

I believe this occurred after an Intel HD Graphics driver update, but I'm not sure. However, I noticed a few days ago that my NVIDIA graphics card wasn't working. I tried doing everything I could: I uninstalled and reinstalled probably 10 different old and new drivers from different sources (NVIDIA, WHQL, Lenovo), tried the "clean install" option, etc. and none of them fixed the problem -- Device Manager simply says Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) and during installation and boot, the system freezes for 30 seconds to a minute or two. I tried booting into another copy of Windows, and sure enough, same problem there, even though it used to be working fine. I even tried booting into Linux and then told the NVIDIA X Server control panel to use NVIDIA graphics, and it subsequently froze. So basically, my GPU is permanently(?) broken as of this week, and I don't understand how. I was using my computer normally and hadn't d...

ubuntu - How to convert .ogg to .mp3?

Ubuntu ripped a CD for me into audio files but they are all .ogg format which I can't play on my MP3 player. How can I convert .ogg files to .mp3 files? Answer There's several ways you can do this. Probably the easiest is to use a tool called ogg2mp3. Details on the Ubuntu forums about how do install it: $ sudo apt-get install mp32ogg lame $ wget ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/plf.zarb.org/plf/mandrake/10.1/noarch/ogg2mp3-0.3-3plf.noarch.rpm $ sudo alien ogg2mp3-0.3-3plf.noarch.rpm $ sudo dpkg -i ogg2mp3_0.3-4_all.deb While this is an RPM for Mandrake, it should work fine after running it through alien and installing the .deb. And in the future, you can use lame to rip CDs in mp3 format as it's installed in the first step. As is commonly pointed out, converting from one lossy format (ogg) to another (mp3) will degrade the quality of the music. But its better than not being able to play the music on your portable device at all ;).

Change font for non-legacy command prompt in Windows 10 with non-ASCII charset - Properties vs default values?

I am fiddling with Windows 10 new command prompt. I am with code page 936 (GBK). I say "new" because I see in the Properties of cmd that there's a check to run legacy command prompt (need restart) , by default unchecked, so I guess this one I am using is "newer". The question is, searching the web only gives me some ways to add a font in registry to make legacy cmd to recognise it and show in "Properties"/"Default values" settings, like this: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/quick-tip-add-fonts-to-the-command-prompt/ It mentions to add a font entry to the shown location in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont to make Windows aware of this font. I note that the fonts already listed there are the same ones that I can see in legacy cmd. In normal cmd I see more fonts. Note that in the picture I opened a legacy cmd prompt, with some Terminal fonts, and in the Properties setting...

networking - Multiple internet connections being used.

Say, on my computer I happen to have three internet sources. USB tether from my phone WiFi to my home network Ethernet to another router different from my wifi. I want to use 1 to brows the web. 2 to transfer files to another machine in the house and 3 to transfers other files to other machines. The above is an overly exaggerated use case. Most likely option 3 wont exist. Is this possible? How? Answer (you don't say what OS so I am assuming windows for this, other OS's have similar commands) This can easily be set up via the route command in windows. route [-f] [-p] [Command [Destination] [mask Netmask] [Gateway] [metric Metric]] [if Interface]] You would need to set up 3 routes Default connection that uses the USB Teather A route for a single computer to use the WiFi A route for the rest of the local connections Assumes: 192.168.0.1 is the IP of the gateway on the tether The interface ID of the WiFi is 11 192.168.1.3 is the IP of the "other computer". The interf...

Windows 10 is rebooting against my explicit will in order to install updates

My Windows 10 Professional (version 1709, build 16299.214) has repeatedly restarted itself in the past in order to install updates. I've set group policies to prevent this, however the system seems to ignore these. monitoring - Easy-to-use tool to monitor incoming network traffic

Possible Duplicate: Monitor all and any internet traffic from my home PC - what should I use? On my Windows XP computer, I sometimes see the task bar network icon light up indicating that a bunch of information is coming in or out of my computer. Just now it happened, and was apparently a Firefox update (at least, Firefox wanted to update itself soon after the activity died down). How can I conveniently tell right away what all the network activity is? I'm aware of Wireshark, but it's a little more low-level than I'm interested in for this purpose. (Or maybe I just don't know how to use wireshark well enough.) I'm hoping there's some tool that will figure out which address the bulk of the packets are coming from, and do a reverse DNS lookup to tell (if possible) what the source is.

linux - Understanding metadata usage behavior in a newly converted btrfs filesystem

I have a 5 TB hard drive with 3.3 TiB (as reported by du ) of media files in 119k files and directories; the average file size was about 28 MiB. I converted the ext4 partition into btrfs with btrfs-convert . The process took 10.4 hours and was CPU-bound. Right after the conversion: # btrfs fi df /mnt/btrfs/ Data, single: total=3.03TiB, used=2.21TiB System, single: total=32.00MiB, used=236.00KiB Metadata, single: total=1.52TiB, used=1.10TiB btrfs allocated all space on the hard drive (3.03 + 1.52 TiB ≈ 5 TB), and it apparently put ~1 TiB of file content into metadata chunks (1.10 TiB used). This is unexpected because very few of my files would fit into the leaf nodes. The standard solution to the huge metadata allocation is to re-balance the metadata. btrfs balance start -m took 8.0 hours and was I/O-bound. Afterwards, it appears that btrfs not only released unused metadata chunks, but also moved file content from metadata chunks into data chunks. # btrfs fi df /mnt/btrfs/ Data, single...

linux - Recursively count all the files in a directory

Possible Duplicate: How can I count the number of folders in a drive using Linux? I have a really deep directory tree on my Linux box. For instance, given this directory tree: /home/blue /home/red /home/dir/green /home/dir/yellow /home/otherDir/ If I pass in /home , I would like for it to return four files. Or, bonus points if it returns four files and two directories. Basically, I want the equivalent of right-clicking a folder on Windows and selecting properties and seeing how many files/folders are contained in that folder. How can I most easily do this? I have a solution involving a Python script I wrote, but why isn't this as easy as running ls | wc or similar? Answer find . -type f | wc -l Explanation: find . -type f finds all files ( -type f ) in this ( . ) directory and in all sub directories, the filenames are then printed to standard out one per line. How to apply group policy settings to specific local accounts in Windows

I created a limited user account and want to restrict USB and CD drive access using group policy settings. Hence I want to use gpedit.msc to enforce restrictions on the limited account and disable access to USB and CD drive, and prevent the limited account from modifying those changes. How can I achieve this without restricting any other accounts? Answer In Windows Vista and later you can apply policies only to a specific account, but you have to load the group policy object editor from the Microsoft Management Console, not by opening the snapin directly. Open mmc.exe When the MMC console opens, click "File" -> "Add/remove snapin" Select "Group Policy Object Editor" and click the "Add >" button In the dialog which appears, click "Browse". Click the "users" tab and select a user. Click "OK", then "Finish", then "OK" again You will now have a group policy user object for the selected user. A...

Windows 10: Switch virtual deskop while in fullscreen remote desktop

I have 3 virtual desktops in Windows 10. On one of those desktop I run mstsc fullscreen. To switch desktop I can use windows+ctrl+left or right. But when I am in a fullscreen mstsc this key is captured by mstsc and switching doesn't work. Is there a way to change this behaviour? Answer I was looking for a solution to this problem and just found one ! CTRL + ALT + HOME gives keyboard focus back to host when in Remote Desktop. Then you can do WIN + CTRL + LEFT or RIGHT to switch between virtual desktops. Not ideal, but i'll probably have autohotkey deal with these 2 shortcuts.

Over 20GB of disk space is gone?

System drive, OS is Windows 7 x64 SP1 Ultimate. Windows Explorer shows 100GB of used space. TreeSizeFree shows 75GB of used space. Total Commander and FAR confirm TreeSizeFree's measurements (counting hidden files). Shadow copy is using up to 5GB with the current usage of 1.36GB. Running FAR from Win7 PE shows the same. Checkdisk shows no bad sectors. Disk is an OCZ SSD. SMART monitor suggests SSD condition is perfect. Where is the rest of space gone? Answer Most Likely Problem: There's a large number of directories and files that even Administrator accounts do not normally have access to, especially in the ProgramData and Windows trees. Without doing something special, most space analysis programs aren't going to correctly account for the space they're using. Using space analysis programs on the Windows folder is already fraught with problems anyway. The folders are densely hardlinked, and very few programs (including Explorer itself) can correctly handle that. In ...

Restore tmux session after reboot

Is there any way to save a tmux session? In other words, if I reboot the computer, will I always lose the sessions? Answer Yes, if you reboot you computer you will lose the sessions. Sessions cannot be saved. But, they can be scripted. What most do in fact is to script some sessions so that you can re-create them. For instance, here's a trivial shell script to create a session: #!/bin/zsh SESSIONNAME="script" tmux has-session -t $SESSIONNAME &> /dev/null if [ $? != 0 ] then tmux new-session -s $SESSIONNAME -n script -d tmux send-keys -t $SESSIONNAME "~/bin/script" C-m fi tmux attach -t $SESSIONNAME Here's what it does. First, it checks if there's any session already with that name (in this case, the very original name is "script") with tmux has-session . It checks the return code. If there's a ongoing session with that name a...

avg antivirus - AVG popup upgrade ad

Lately my free AVG antivirus pops up with an annoying upgrade ad every so often. Is there any way to disable it? Answer No . You could either buy it or uninstall it . Any other ways (such as 'hacking' the application), if possible, are immoral and possibly illegal (depending on your country). Although a lot of quality software is free, if you are the type of person who uses security suites, I strongly suggest you purchase and pay for it. Some suggestions include:

partitioning - Moving files from one partition to another on an SSD

If a drive doesn't know about partitions and files systems why moving a file from one partition to another takes relatively long time, unlike the instantaneous move on the same partition? Is that file system inefficiency? In this case, NTFS. It seems like the file is being copied and then original is erased, instead of removing the entry about that file in one partition and making it in another? Answer Each partition has it's own, independent file system . If you move a file within a partition, the file system can simply rewrite the reference to that file. But when moving a file between partitions, the file system on the destination partition doesn't know anything about the new file - there is no reference to adjust. Furthermore, each partition will have it's own physical area of the drive to itself, so the file must be copied to the new partition, then deleted from the old partition. I have two Radeon cards in this machine, a Radeon HD 6570 and a Radeon HD 6950 : lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Turks [Radeon HD 6570] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cayman PRO [Radeon HD 6950] I'm trying to get VGA passthrough to work with KVM on Debian 7 (Wheezy), passing through the 6950 as a secondary video card to a Windows 7 guest. This works fine if I blacklist the radeon kernel module via /etc/modprobe.d/ . If I remove the blacklist to run X11 (or even just a KMS console) on the 6570 the radeon module seems to attach to both cards: dmesg | egrep "01:00.0|02:00.0|radeon" pci 0000:01:00.0: [1002:6759] type 0 class 0x000300 pci 0000:01:00.0: reg 10: [mem 0xe0000000-0xefffffff 64bit pref] pci 0000:01:00.0: reg 18: [mem 0xf7e20000-0xf7e3ffff 64bit] pci 0000:01:00.0: reg 20: [io 0xe000-0xe0ff] pci 0000:01:00.0: reg 30: [mem 0xf7e00000-0xf7e1ffff pref] pci 0000:01:00...

windows - Accidentally deleted torrent on uTorrent

So I've been downloading this torrent for 3 days now, its 180GB and instead of pause I somehow clicked delete torrent+data. The data and torrent is in the recycle bin still. How do I get them back to utorrent so it continues downloading? Is there maybe a way to access Recycle Bin without double-clicking it? I cant go to the Recycle Bin and just clicked Restore All Files because its just loading infinitely.

Slow solid state drive on laptop running Linux

I installed a solid state drive on my laptop, but I don't get the blazing speeds which people write about. My system: Laptop: Acer Aspire 7552G-6061 Solid state drive: Crucial 256GB M4 CT256M4SSD2 Operating system: Linux (Trisquel 5.5, a derivative of Ubuntu) I am using AHCI. I installed the operating system onto the solid state drive (as opposed to copying it). How can I make the solid state drive faster? Could the problem be with the block or sector alignment? Answer Answering Your Questions First The problem should not be related to sector alignment. I have two tips below for keeping up performance on SSDs. Understanding SSD Benefits The "blazing speeds" people experience on solid-state drives are referring to reading from and writing to the drive . Compared to hard disk drives, SSDs have very low access times and higher data transfer rates , especially when accessing randomly. Operations beyond reading and writing data to the SSD do not have a performance increase,...

microsoft excel - Where is "Browse in same window" in Windows 7

How in the world do you configure IE8 to NOT open excel documents in its window. There was a setting ("Browse in same window") in XP under Folder Options > File Types where you could specify the behaviour. Nothing like that exists in Vista/Windows 7. Why is that even the default behaviour? Why yes, I would like to open this excel file in the browser window with no toolbars. /sarcasm Answer It looks like the capability to do this was removed from the GUI in Windows 7 . Have a read of the following for instructions on how to change the behaviour via the registry to how you want it: - How to configure Internet Explorer to open Office documents in the appropriate Office program instead of in Internet Explorer - A new window opens when you try to view a 2007 Microsoft Office program document in Windows Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8

windows 7 - How to import a scheduled task from an XML file?

I have created a scheduled task in Windows 7, which will run a batch file once a day. The task is running perfectly well on my computer. I have also exported the task to an XML file and want to create the same task on another computer. How can I import the XML file in Task Scheduler on the second computer? Specifically – I don't want to write any code on new computer, I just want to copy the XML file to it and it should create a task and start running it. Answer When you open Task Scheduler on the new computer, click on "Import Task..." in the Actions list on the right-hand side of the window: Select the XML file and click "Open", then review the parameters in the "Create Task" window that opens, and click "OK". If you need to do this programmatically, you can use schtasks.exe . The following code should import the XML file and create a new task automatically: schtasks.exe /Create /XML task.xml /tn taskname Just replace "task.xml"...

linux - Dual-boot AND Virtualize Both Windows 8 and Ubuntu

Dual-booting Windows and Linux is well-documented, as is running one of the bootable OSes as a VM inside the other (ex, dual-boot Windows & Ubuntu; in Windows, host Ubuntu in a VM using VMWare Workstation/Player/etc). I am planning out a build and I want to have the best of both worlds: to be able to boot into Windows 8 and run Ubuntu in a VM, then to boot into the same Ubuntu install and run the same Windows 8 install in a VM, with both OSes sharing a partition for project files, etc. It seems that it should be possible. Are there any caveats that would make this impossible / extremely difficult / unstable? Are there any suggested disk configurations (two physical drives, etc)? UPDATE: I found some information on getting Windows 7 & 8 running in this setup. It's quite hacktastic and there's a good chance you'll bork your Windows install, but in case anyone is more committed to this than I am: http://geekery.amhill.net/2010/01/27/virtualbox-with-existing-windows-par...

Setting up wifi router as a switch for Internet Connection Sharing

Can my laptop with a 3G connection share its Internet via a Wifi router (Dlink DIR-615)? If so, what should I set on my laptop, on my router or on the devices connecting to the router? Answer How to configure a Wi-Fi router to share your computer's 3G data stick connection to everyone. Connect to the Internet on your 3G data stick. Plug your laptop to one of the router's LAN ports. Wait until the router connects correctly. Click Start > Control Panel > View Network status and tasks > Change adapter settings Right click the modem (or the connection where you get Internet from) > Status > Details. Write down the "IPv4 DNS Servers" on a piece of paper. Click Close once. Right click the Local Area Network > Status > Details. Write down the "IPv4 Default Gateway". Click Close > Close. Open the browser and type the IPv4 Default Gateway on the addressbar. Routers are all different so you need to figure out where to find and configure the f...

Word files to PDF w/o losing image quality

I will admit I am a total noob when it comes to this. I have a Word 2010 file that has images and when I do either Save As PDF or print using a PDFCreator, I always get images with jagged diagonal lines and generally of worse quality. I tried it with JPEG as well as PNG, I tried it with Word 2010 and OpenOffice. No luck. I even turned image compression off in Word 2010...still compressed it. What am I doing wrong? Surely, there is a way to keep some quality when it comes to images?

Linux on UEFI - how to reboot to the UEFI setup screen like Windows 8 can?

makeuseof.com explains that Windows 8 certified hardware has a new way to enter the UEFI setup screen (equivalent to BIOS). From How To Access The BIOS On A Windows 8 Computer : No longer do we press a certain key during the boot process to reveal the BIOS – instead, an option to access the BIOS is located in Windows 8’s boot options menu... If you’re just here to access your computer’s UEFI BIOS, click the Troubleshoot tile. The main developer of Secure Boot for Linux says that alternative OS's can't assume the old way will continue to work . So does Linux also have a new way to enter UEFI setup? I have an ASUS motherboard. It suggests that an upgraded version of the firmware contains a fast boot option . The flip side is that the option might make it even harder to "reveal the BIOS" than it already is. I don't mind tinkering. Just if this is known to be a bad idea, I don't want to go through the risk of a firmware upgrade for nothing (and maybe have to pop t...

video - How do I merge MP4 files without audio going out of sync?

Is there a tool I can use that can merge MP4 files without throwing the audio out of sync? I generated some MP4 files from a DVD using AVIDemux but whatever tool I try to use always ends up throwing the audio out of sync with the video. The further you get into the video the further off-sync the audio is. By themselves the MP4/AAC videos have perfect audio-video sync. later tonight i might try http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to examine the file before and after to see if anything changed in the media format. Answer Avidemux should do it without problems, which one are you using? Try the latest SVN build MuldeR builds, I've never had a problem of not synced audio with it. Anyway, as the container is mp4 mp4box may come handy. I suggest you use the latest development build (0.4.6 at the time of writing). If you need a GUI frontend for it, take a look at YAMB or My MP4box GUI . I you don't mind the container, I suggest Matroska (it's quite flexible, scalable and adds lit...

linux - How to route only specific subnet (source ip) to a particular interface?

How to route only specific subnet (source ip) to a particular interface? OS: Linux I know I can do easily by destination IP by using something like route add 1.2.3.4/24 dev eth4 but I do not see how can route based on source IP. Answer You need to use policy based routing. Something kind of like ip rule add from / table ip route add 1.2.3.4/24 via dev eth4 table is either table name specified in /etc/iproute2/rt_tables or you can use numeric id ... This pretty much says, that all traffic from 1.2.3.4/24 will be routed using routing table . IIRC it doesen't use the default table after going through this, so if you need other routes (ie. default gateway), you need to add them to the table as well.
